Display Manager and applets

	Unless I'm more confused than usual, I'm currently running lxdm 
(set to MATE) on F28. I'm glad to have a display manager that works; but 
it denies me the two applets I use most. I normally restrict each 
workspace to a single app, and keep 18 spaces open (mostly with eight or 
ten in actual use); but the current setup only allows me two workspaces, 
causing a clutter.

	Also, eyes in each of four panels are by far the easiest way for 
my ancient eyeballs to find the mouse cursor; and the current setup has 
no eyes at all, afaict.

	Clue, please?

The nearest thing I can think of is "xeyes".  With help from other members of
this list, I installed "xeyes" on my workstation w-a-a-a-y back in 2013. 
"xeyes" is a part of "X.Org X11 applications":

If you don't already have it, just install it using dnf.  The executable will be
"/usr/bin/xeyes".  The 2013 Fedora users list thread on this is here:

Note that back then, we used "yum" instead of "dnf".

Now if only someone could tell me how to get "xsnow" working properly in Gnome
and KDE!

I don't think this is a function of lxdm.  I run lxde from startx, but
the actual desktop manager I use is openbox, which I set in the lxde
configuration. In the configuration file for openbox, I can set the
number of workspaces.  It defaulted to two, which I upped to 4, but
there is no reason you couldn't make it as many as you want.

The actual desktop manager you are using is probably *not* openbox, but
somewhere in the mate configuration files the desktop manager you *are*
using will be set.  Find that, and then configure the desktop manager
to have however many workspaces you want.

I think Bill is right about xeyes, but if you can't find that, there is
also an addon that puts a vertical and horizontal line through the
cursor.  I remember trying it a long time ago, but found it too
distracting.  On the other hand, the location of the cursor was always
*strikingly* clear, the intersection of the two lines.

A few things.  First, except for that kwallet issue with (I think) lightdm I have not
had any problems with the various DMs in combination with different Desktops.
If you're having problems getting/finding a DM that works I think it points to a
problem on your system which should be found.

Second, I have an F28 VM running Mate.  I just switched to lxdm for a test and I've
no problems to configure 18 workspaces.

You say "four panels".  Does this mean you've added 2 additional panels to
the 2
default ones?  You've added panels to the sides?

I am also able to select "Add to panel" in Mate and select from the menu
"eyes" and
have "eyes" placed on the panel.  Are you saying that selection doesn't
exist for you?

	I haven't yet in this case, but I will, yes. Any two pair of eyes 
will indicate an intersection of their lines of sight, but redundancy is 
often convenient, especially if the cursor has snuck off into the tuley-
weeds.

will be "/usr/bin/xeyes." Using that as a command (by root) does create 
one pair of eyes, but they don't make it onto the panel meny. Do I just 
need to reboot? I will in a little while, anyway.

I use Gnome (mostly) and KDE (rarely).  I'm not familiar with Mate; I don't know
what a "panel meny" is.  But no, you don't need to reboot.

Regardless of which user name I log in as, I launch xeyes from ".bash_profile",
and put it into the background.  This way, the xeyes process and display is associated
with the login and root window (is that the correct term?)  rather than any regular window
or process.  The xeyes remain until I log off.  I have a dual monitor system, so I
actually launch two xeyes: one on each monitor.  Here are the ".bash_profile"
lines I use:

/usr/bin/xeyes -geometry 300x300+2259+0 -fg black -center pink  -outline black &
/usr/bin/xeyes -geometry 300x300+2560+0 -fg white -center black -outline red &
---------------
The first puts an xeyes in the upper right corner of the left monitor; the second puts an
xeyes in the upper left corner of the right monitor.  Both xeyes follow the cursor no
matter which monitor it's on.  You can launch as few or many xeyes as you want, and
put them where ever you want.  Type the command "xeyes ?" for more information
on command line parameters and options.

If you have the xorg-x11-apps RPM installed, on Mate you can right-click
on the panel, select "Add to panel", then scroll down and select
"Eyes".
It'll add the eyes to the panel where ever you had right-clicked. You
can move it around if you wish by right-clicking on the eyes icon and
selecting "Move".

Personally, I don't use them. They're sort of, uhm, well, "creepy". :-)

OK.....   Just a note to others on this thread.  MATE has its own "built-in"
eyes
that goes on the panel.  So, let's not get off-track.

The "panel eyes" of MATE are supplied in the package mate-applets.  The current
version is mate-applets-1.20.2-1.fc28.  Is that installed?  If it is, you may still
want to try "dnf reinstall mate-applets" to see if that changes things.

Ah, yes, you're quite correct. Xeyes are generic and end up on the root
window. Both Xfce and MATE have their own plugins that dock to the
menu bars. Xfce's is in the xfce4-eyes-plugin RPM.
