Why "better yet"? Dag's version is the latest code, and it's all

Fair question.
As packages go pine is harder to build than helloworld and vastly
easier than apache, emacs, perl, the kernel, or the X window system.
From time to time, in this brave new world of open source there is
value in working from source. The pine package is as good a non trivial
package as there is.
I do agree, RPM packages are good when nicely done. This is why I
repeated the previous hint to use dag's package and did not go into
serious detail on the build your own path.
