I use a Netgear FA311 PCI adapter and use the driver that comes with
Fedora. I use the DP83815 (MacPhyter) Ethernet ethO driver.

Since you're asking about PCI adapters and wireless, is it safe to
assume you're thinking of using wireless to connect from some distance
because you can't get broadband where you are?
I am using an Orinoco Silver card (external antenna connector), with a
SCM SBI-D2P swapbox adapter in an pII-366. Works just fine with Fedora,
no special config or tweaking necessary.
I've used these cards with various PCI and ISA adapter cards as well,
never had any problems. Very easy to setup. All versions of linux that
I've tried just see the card during install.
Besides that, there's a California Amplifiers directional antenna (model
130094-130135) on a 40ft tower (LMR400 cable), and an amp (unfortunately
fed into the furthest point from the antenna - read: loss of almost half
my power) which is pointed to an omni directional AP 10km (over the
horizon in this area) away. I can easily get an 11M connection to the
AP (from there to the rest of the net, it's 2M symmetrical).
Never had any problems with connectivity through the winter, but now
that trees are budding, I get occasional dropouts, though I admit I'm
shooting my signal through trees on my property - pine, poplar and
maple. I need to either move/raise the tower, or get a chainsaw :)
Get yourself a good line of sight and don't setup in late fall like I
did, you'll only end up having to tweak it in the spring.

if this is a desktop machine, save yourself the trouble and get a
wireless-ethernet bridge. you'll spend about $15 more, but you'll have
less nightmares. newegg.com has the linksys bridge for $83, just hook
that up to your existing ethernet and BLAM, you're set. also, if you
have multiple machinesin the room that need connectivity, then just get
a hub for 30 bucks and wire them.
it's alot cheaper in the long run.

Thanks much for all your guys help. Last night I went out and bought two
Netgear MA311 pci adapter cards and a Netgear MR814. I put one adapter
card in my wife's windoze box and the other in my Fedora box. In quoting
my friend Duncan here, "BLAM" kudzu picked it up and I set it up in
Fedora no problem. :) I will need to buy an ethernet bridge for my
*cough* xbox *cough* as well. Once again thanks much.

Well, I put a Linksys WMP54G pci card in one of my Fedora boxes to see
what would happen. Nothing happened! Kudzu missed it altogether. Looks
like you made the right choice.

purchase. The Orinoco (Prism) chipsets seem to have the best luck with
Linux.

I use Netgear Cable/DSL ProSafe Firewall/Print Server Model:FR114P and
im using a Toshiba PCX1100U Cable Modem. I have not had to do anything
to get my router working. I just setup my Internet Provider information
and it works fine.

I haven't really tried to get my Linksys components to work with
Fedora...I've had enough problem just getting them to work with Microsoft!
I bought one Access Point, one PCMCIA card and two PCI cards. The access
point was defective and one of the antennae on the PCI cards was
broken...a 50% failure rate.
These were 54Mb components. Linksys have recnetly announced a new 108MB
set of components but the 54MB parts cannot be upgraded via
microcode (unlike DLink).
The Linksys website says that their PCI cards support WPA. What they
don't say is that it is only under XP. Not only do they not support Linux
they even mislead their Win customers.
While their customer support folks are polite they don't have any
technical knowledge. They promised a call back from their 2nd level
support that never came. I figured out my problem without them.
Bottomline, if you are thinking of wireless DO NOT even consider Linksys.
They don't even pretend to support Linux and do a poor job with Windows.

I don't think Windows supports WPA except under Windows XP. I do know
that XP did not support WPA out of the box. I had to download a service
pack to get that support. WPA is mostly a driver thing, or at least
support for it can be done in software.
Linux WPA support is another issue entirely. The support must be added
to the Linux drivers but most manufacturers do not support Linux. Of all
the wireless chip manufacturers, Atheros is the only one that I know of
that actively supports Linux. WPA for Atheros based cards is in
development I am not sure what the status is. (see Madwifi on
sourceforge.net)

I used the Netgear 4-port Wireless Router (MR814v2, supporting 802.11b) when running RH
9.0 and FC1 with never a problem of any kind (the NIC was a Realtek RTL8139 PCI card). I
later upgraded the router to a Netgear wireless WGT624 (supporting 802.11g) using this
same NIC with zero problems (I just unhooked the cables on the old router and plugged in
the new router -- my kind of installation!).
I recently put together a new computer using the ASUS P4C800-E Deluxe
mobo that has a built-in 82547EI Gigabit Ethernet controller and the
WGT624 Netgear router was seamlessly recognized and configured during a
scratch reinstall of FC1.
I don't see how you can go wrong with one of these Netgear routers.

Have used both linksys and netgear routers. Have used the Linksys
BEFSR41 for many years in several different locations. Worked well.
Only recently did I have a problem with that unit. In a new location I
found that an FTP through the BEFSR41 would be corrupted. The file
transfer would be completed but the contents of the file was mangled.
Was not the old ascii vs. binary modes issue, that was my first
thought. Played with the MTU but that did not make any real
difference. Tried two different ftp servers on the server as well as
different clients on the workstation. Finally replace the unit with a
Netgear FSV318. This resolved the FTP problem.
The Netgear presented a couple of its own issues. First issue involved
email. Found that internal systems that were configured using the
public IP address for the SMTP server were denied access. Apparently
the Netgear NATs the internal workstations IP address before passing it
on to the internal server. Confirmed this with ethereal traces. So
SMTP traffic was denied since relaying by the public IP address was not
allowed. The Linksys behaved differently, it redirected the packets
without NATing them so connections were accepted by the SMTP server.
An unresolved issue, despite several emails back and forth with Netgear
tech support, involves the FSV318s VPN support. Have been able to
establish VPN connections with remote systems. However, have not been
able to get windows network browsing to work over the VPN connection.
Ethereal traces showed no netbios traffic getting to the server coming
from the router. My guess is that the router is not passing the traffic
through. Not a linux issue but has been annoying. Still working
through some samba variations to make sure WINS services are working
correctly.
All in all I like some of the features of the Netgear routers better.
The logging functions are better, you can have the router send copies of
the logs periodically or when they fill up. Linksys logging is pretty
limited in this regard on both the BEFSR41 and the WAP54G I have used.
I think Netgears VPN support could be improved, but I have not used any
Linksys products that support VPN so can not compare them directly.
Linksys does pass IPSec through just fine. Used secure remote with
Checkpoint for a long time this way using the BEFSR41.
If you are asking about wireless cards with Linux I have had less luck
with that. Still have to put in some additional time to get that sorted
out. But the Linksys G PCMCIA card was not directly recognized nor was
the Dlink DWL-G650. I have not dived into that issue more than an
initial attempt.
