Radio streaming

Dear All,

Recently I have shift from win to fedora. I am trying to listen few of my favourates
Internet radio stations, but unfortunatly most of them are using MS friendly versions. can
any body help me to configure mplayer of Rhythm box to run .asx, .m3u files from following
sites :

http://www.tarana.co.nz/
http://www.madhursangeet.com/MSP/
http://radio.bollywood.mu/
etc.

Hi Arun. Which version of Fedora are you using?

I normally play these streams using Firefox, for which you will need to 
install some plugins, mainly mplayerplug-in, and realplayer for linux.

The first and third sites run ok using mplayerplug-in, and the second site 
works ok when realplayer is selected on the webpage (tested on FC2).

For RealPlayer:  http://www.real.com/linux/
Post back for install advice if you're not sure.

For mplayerplug-in, use either the Livna, or Freshrpms repo. Instructions are 
on the sites for installing the repo, then you can use Yum to install 
mplayerplugin, which will pull in some deps, including mplayer if you don't 
already have it installed.

Download the asx file and open it with a text editor. Then, you can
see the mms address, which you can open with mplayer (with all codecs
previously installed). For instance,

mplayer "mms://ac1.streaming.net.nz/tarana1"

Regarding pls files, proceed similarly:

mplayer "http://ct5.fast-serv.com:9620"

With m3u files:

mplayer -playlist http://www.radioparadise.com/musiclinks/rp_128.m3u

Where did you get the codecs you installed and where are they installed?

This is almost exactly what I did as far as codecs are concerned but
sound still does not work.

Hi Arun. Do you have any other DNS problems? Can you webbrowse ok?

Have a look in /etc/resolv.conf. Is your ISP's nameserver listed there?

The site works ok for me using mplayer "mms://ac1.streaming.net.nz/tarana1" , 
but I usually use mplayerplug-in with Firefox to listen to streams from sites 
like these, not that that is any help to you though.

The problem has nothing to do woth DNS not reolve.conf. It is the permissions on
some compnent of the sound system since:
1. The command works if the permission of /dev/dsp as 666
2. It works as root with the permission of /dev/dsp as 660

I would love to know what component has the wrong permissions.

In all fairness Aaron, I was replying to Arun, who does appear to have some 
sort of DNS problem.

I was thinking of posting your problem to the alsa-user, and alsa-devel lists, 
but as it appears to have worsened with the latest version of Fedora, it 
appears to be more of some sort of permissions problem within Fedora, than an 
Alsa problem, but you already appear to know that.

Personally, if sound was working on F7, I'd reinstall that. That way at least 
the sound is working. Also I would try a live cd (Knoppix for example), and 
see if the sounds are ok. Also, if you have sufficient harddrive space, 
install another distro, and see if the isa card is detected, and working ok.

Someone else had suggested getting a cheap pci card, and using that, and 
forgetting about the onboard isa one, which could be a good idea, if your 
getting so many problems with the isa one.

On one of my machines I have an ensoniq pci card (ens1371). I have an isa slot 
on the mobo on this machine, and had an isa card lying about (sb16), and 
plugged it in. I only set it up on FC3, and it worked ok, but did want to 
grab the card0 position, which meant that the ensoniq card had to be set to 
card1. I also have FC6 available on this machine, but havn't tried 
configuring the isa soundcard on it. I may well try it, as you said you had 
problems getting the isa soundcard modules loaded on FC6.

I apologize.  I thought it was a typo on my name. Sound works in f7 and
I have f7 on a laptop that I am using. I just was trying to move forward
and thought that someone might have an idea what permissions could be
involved. But what bothers me that I am apprehensive of continuing on
with Fedora. Is f9 going to be better? It is all so frustrating after 15
or 20 years of success.

Again thanks all of your, for your efforts to solve the problem, it is working through
terminal only. Ans to other querries, (might be helpful for further improvements )
1. My DNS is working properly and I can surf the net
2. I was trying all this, as a usr (not as a root)
3. permission to /dev/dsp is as follows
crw-rw----+ 1 root root??? 14,?? 3 2008-02-14 16:57 dsp
4. Through GUI mode still not working

There is nothing in name, unless you are using it as username
