I tried to start firefox on the command line,and this is what I get.
[david@reddwarf ~]$ /usr/lib/firefox-3.0/firefox
The program 'firefox' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadName (named color or font does not exist)'.
(Details: serial 738 error_code 15 request_code 45 minor_code 0)
(Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)
I don't understand what is happening,how do I fix it.

I had this problem after upgrade from F8 to F9, which left xorg.conf
unmodified. Older xorg.conf specified path to fonts, including xfs (X
Font Server). The quickest way to fix issue was to do "service xfs
start". The proper way is to remove older entries -- compare your
xorg.conf with the one from fresh install.
Of course, that was my problem after upgrade, and your problem can be
totally unrelated.

have you tried using '--sync' as stated in error message. this could help
with out reinstalling f8.
oops. that should have read '--sync' when called from xterm.
another suggestion, if you can make room on your system, setup a
partition
for doing new installs and upgrades, or at least, make a full backup or an
image of partition. this way you can restore back to a working install.

I think you need to tell us something more about your environment, about
which so far we know nothing at all. Please state:
1) Fedora version
2) Desktop environment (Gnome, KDE, other)
3) Desktop theme (because the error refers to a problem with colours or
fonts)
4) Whether previous versions of Firefox have worked correctly, e.g. FF

5) How you installed FF. For example, /usr/lib/firefox-3.0/firefox is

i do not understand what he _is_ trying to do by using a cli or an xterm.
seems that with him using kmail, why not just use kmenu and select
firefox.

Using "kmenu/firefox" it times out.As this FC9 is an upgrade from FC8 I'm
getting alot of trouble with KDE 4,I will have to do a clean install. I'll
install FC8 as I know it is reasonably stable unlike this upgrade.

Is there some reason you can not use the shell script in /usr/bin?
You should be able to type firefix from the command prompt, unless
you do not have X running or you are not the user that "owns" the X
secession... (If you opened up a terminal window on your desktop,
then running firefox should work.)
