I'm finally fed up with Windows and Microsoft in general. I just signed up to this
mailing list and am making the first steps to moving over to Linux. From what I have read
Fedora is the way to go. So now I must download, but before I make the switch I have some
questions:
1) Is it a good idea to do the dual particion so I keep WinXP for a while? Because
frankly I want it gone as fast as possible...
2) I'm hooked up to a LAN connection through my college, does Linux come with a web
browser like Windows does, because if so I should have no problems with anything, I'm
just worried about putting it on and not having the ability to get on for help.
3) I have a bunch of drivers and such that came with the computer, will they work for
Linux, or are they only formatted for Windows? The disks don't say windows on them at
all, but I'm not sure.
That's it for now, but trust me when I say you will all be hearing from me a lot...
Hehe.
One question about this forum, is there a way to stop them from mailing everything to me,
I'll just go to the site to check responds and such...

If you are ready for the plunge I have always felt it was best to wipe
out windows and use the whole disk for linux. If you setup a dual boot
system you may find that you won't spend the time to find equivalent
programs native to linux for the day to day tasks that you do.
Virtually everything that windows does linux can do.
What you want to do is assess the programs and tasks that you need to
have and do some google searches to find appropriate linxu
applications. You may find that many come standard with Fedora, others
you may need to pull from other repositories.

with anything, I'm just worried about putting it on and not having the ability to get

Several different ones including Firefox. No problem there.

Most likely you won't need those disks. Most of the drivers are built
in to linux. The one area that is problematic is wireless drivers but
there are several native wireless drivers available as well as
ndiswrapper that lets you use the windows driver for your wireless card.
All of this depends on the particular chip set in the wireless card.

One question about this forum, is there a way to stop them from mailing everything to me,
I'll just go to the site to check responds and such...
I believe you can set
that option at the forum web page.
When you do require help please provide info about your particular
system and include relevant error messages and log files. Keeps us from
having to read your mind. :)

I disagree. For someone who is just learning how to run Linux, dual-booting
is probably better. It may take longer to learn how to use Linux, true, but
having that Windows system there which you *know* works will come in handy
when you can't figure out why your internet connection won't work. Boot into
Windows, fire up Thunderbird, and send a message to this list.
My first Linux box was RH 7.2 dual-booted with Win2K. At first, I used
Windows almost exclusively. Now, I haven't booted into Windows on this
computer in years. 'Course, it also helps that I have a backup laptop for
when things go horrifically wrong. ;-)
Once you know you can reliably reach the outside world for help from your
Linux box, then you can safely zark Windows.

Agent" extension. Many sites that stop you from entering because you're not
running IE will work just fine under Firefox if you spoof your user agent
string (most sites, in fact, work just fine).

At these sites or actually any site that doesn't support anything but
IE I take the two minutes to email the site maintainers. A few
minutes may be worth it.
A few years ago I came across a site that only supported M$'s java and
would not work. I emailed the site and they basically said that they
were not going to do anything about the java. I wonder how they are
dealing with those MS customers that don't have the MS java? Now if I
could remember?
My bank supports Firefox but not tabbed browsing fully. It croaks on
one link due to tabs. Oh well it can be worked around.

ActiveX controls are a major security hazard anyway. The security model
is simply "they're signed, so if they do anything bad you can identify
who was responsible".
I *hope* you can't get those things to work on any sane browser. Last I
checked, even Internet Explorer disables them if you set it to "High
security".

As unfortunate as it is, my bank for e-banking services REQUIRES (via
UsetAgent string) IE and/or Netscape 7.x. That's just plain stupid, I've
told them to only check the Mozilla part of the string so users with
other Mozilla-based browsers like Firefox or Opera can also access the
sites... They do not listen.

I certainly wasn't advocating spoofing the useragent string *all* the time.
Only on those few sites that say they require IE, when they really don't. My
bank's pretty good at making their website standards compliant, so I can get
to it with any browser, but there is one other site I visit frequently that
says it requires NS or IE, even though it works perfectly well in Firefox.
Again, I've written to the webmaster about this, but to no avail.
It's an uphill struggle.

Keep trying -- it takes a long time for big institutions to change. For a
long long time, one of the large financial institutions I use had the same
problem, but after several years, suddenly they had a site redesign that was
basically standards-compliant and had no such arbitrary checks.

And sometimes they can move with surpriseing speed. Back when my bank
wsa just getting started, they were IE only. And I was using IBrowse
on an amiga at the time. It only took 2 messages to get it fixed to
where I could log into my account and send my bill paying checks out
electronicly, which I'm still doing today with mozilla. It helped
that I mentioned I had a 5 figure amount on deposit, maybe, maybe
not.
I've found that most banks whose initials aren't BOA, can be moderatly
co-operative when the advantages are pointed out to them.
BOA is another horse entirely, and my interface with them has always
been disastrous. Twice, at a cost of probably $1000 or more for both
times was enough. Recycled account number problems it would take
them weeks to fix, in the meantime I've got $1500 in bouncing checks
that are costing me (then=1980) $10 a bounce attempt, all of which
are going into your credit report of course. They had my paycheck, I
had the receipt, but the account was overdrawn by thousands.
Some of that haunted me for a decade or more, clear across the friggin
country. It sure feels good when you quit beating your head against
that particular stone wall.

Congratulations. Step 1 is to READ THE RELEASE NOTES. READ THEM TWICE!

Others may disagree but I would recommend dual booting with Boot Magic.

The default browser in FC3 is Firefox which knocks the socks off of IE6.

I have found that most things work "out of the box." Laptops MIGHT be
more of a challenge but they tend to be resolvable. Internal WinModems
MAY work but they are troublesome. I have successfully installed Fedora
on a number of computers, some with IDE RAID, SCSI RAID, one with a
Promise IDE card, wireless on a laptop, many different NICS, several
different processors, a variety of printers etc. So far, only one old
SCSI scanner card has been unresolvable.
That's it for now, but trust me when I say you will all be
hearing from me a lot... Hehe.
The default GUI in Fedora is Gnome. I recommend installing KDE as well
(both are on the installation disk). Many of us prefer KDE but it's a
matter of taste.
Once you install, if you have device problems, post the output from
lspci -v.

It will be much easier to just wipe XP and use the whole disk for
Fedora. However you certainly can set up a dual boot; but you'll have
to do more work and understand what's going on much more. Unless you
have something important that you need XP for, just get rid of it.
Note that you will have to repartition your drive (which the Fedora
installation can step you through).

Fedora should have no problem. LAN (Ethernet) connections are
supported very well; it's usually modems that cause Linux the most
fits. And the web browser bundled with Fedora (which is Mozilla, see
http://www.mozilla.org/) is top-notch, and most believe to be way
better than IE.
However if you are really worried about stranding yourself away from
any help, and you can't find anybody around you that can help (which
would be unlikely at a college), then you might want to keep your
XP---mainly to make you feel more comfortable.
Are you installing on a desktop or a laptop? I only mention this
because laptop installation could be considered a little more "risky"
than a desktop one, mainly because of the strange and specialized
hardware. Just trying to help you assess your risks if you can't ask
for help later.

You probably won't not need any drivers, certainly not any Windows
drivers. Almost everything you'll need comes with Fedora.
Oh, if you download disks and burn them yourself; be sure to:
1. Check the disks (can be done when you attempt to boot from
disk #1, but before the hard drive is formatted/changed)
2. Be sure to also download and burn the "rescue" CD. If there
ever is a big problem, then it can make recovery much easier.
Better to have it and never need it than to need it and not have it.

Hang onto Windows for a while. Set up your Linux install as a dual boot. (Buy
a 2nd disk for this.) Don't go cold turkey.

What do you want? Firefox? OK. Mozilla? OK. Konquerer? OK. And many more.
Fedora installs Firefox by default.

To quote an old saying, "Not bloody likely." If you have a desktop machine,
this shouldn't be a problem. If it's a laptop, post a message with details and
lots of helpful folks will give you pointers.

That's how we all learned. Do your research on Google first and post a
question when you're stumped. You'll be amazed how short the time before
you're posting answers to newbie questions yourself.

I find it useful to have each message mailed to me. You can use gmane (Google
is your friend) to have a newsgroup interface. I set up this mail account only
for the various lists I'm on and read it with a news reader (OK... on Windows,

Linux comes with more browsers than you'll need. Or at least the Fedore
distribution of Linux does.

Some very nice manufactures may provide 'drivers' for linux on the cd.
But that seems to me to be a rareity. However Fedora handles a wide
array of hardware, so must if not all should be detected. But I suggest

I definately vote for keeping Windows around at least for a while for
a number of reasons:
1. For whatever reason, there's always a chance with any OS
installation that it just won't work. I've installed or upgraded
Fedora seven or eight times with no problems but you never know. It's
just seems like a good contingency plan to keep a running OS installed
as a backup in case of a botched install.
2. Disks are so cheap now that keeping 10 or 20 Gig devoted to a
windows partition doesn't really do much harm.
3. Every once in a while you may actually need it. I've used Linux
for nine years and as my primary desktop OS for about seven years now
and I still use windows for some things that don't work on Linux.
Wine (a tool that lets you run Windows executables on Linux) does a
good job with some things such as MS-Office and Lotus Notes but still
won't run some things that I need such as MS-Project and Visio. The
list of things that I need windows for keeps getting smaller and will
go away totally with a couple of years but not yet.
4. Games. There are still some games that I boot into windows for.
With all that said, even if you do leave the Windows partition around,
you'll probably find that you're using it less and less until one day
you realize that you haven't booted into Windows for a month. Then
you can get rid of it.

Nope; it'll be a crutch. Get in, get wet and have fun. Just about
the only thing you _won't_ find in a full-install of FC3 that you will
find in Windows are premium games and viruses/spyware/etc.

Nope it doesn't have a browser...it comes with 2? 3? 4? It's in
there.

Nope; unless it's really, really new or some 'gadget' that only runs
in Windows, you're set to go. And, you might actually learn something
about the hardware you're on, if you care to look in the logs.

As a newbie to linux myself. I built a computer specifically for learning
the platform - it let me kill the software as often as I liked till I learnt
it (still working on that). The main problem I had was that the LAN chipset
wasn't recognised by the kernel. It was a relatively unusual ALi chipset,
the core recognised everything on the m-board except the LAN (the wireless
card also didn't boot). I had to download and install the driver separately
(by downloading to my winxp laptop, burning a CD and moving it over that
way).
Because the net is essential, you might want to try a live bootable CD first
just to check that the kernel is more likely to recognise the LAN. I don't
know if there's a live CD for Fedora, but you could try Ubuntu or Knoppix.
That said, my chipset was probably just unusual enough not to have made the

just that in my experience, if it doesn't happen to work "out of the box"
you might be in for a fast learning curve learning all the silly and simple
things regular uses think are normal part of everyday life (like the command

Yes.
I know most linux evangelist will say its a bad idea, but I support
having a dual partition. Reasons :
1. If things don't work out the first time, you have a fall back.
2. You need it to play games . The reason I have a win partition at home
is just this.

Linux was developed on the WWW. So, net access/connecting to the
internet/ browsing is something you will not have to worry about.
Fedora has Firefox and mozilla ( www.mozilla.org), konqueror, and, If
you still want to browse through the terminal (cmd in windows), you have
lynx.

If they don't explicitly mention linux, they are Windows only. But most
stuff works out of the box for Linux.

I want to hear how it goes. Obviously there is no shortage of people here
that will tell you it will be painless to switch. And it may be, but
it depends on what you now use windows for. Keep your windows for a
little while you
might need it.
And please post how the transition is going along as you make your way.
My hunch is that it will not be painless.

The link you want is at the very bottom of that page, "Unsubscribe or
edit options". When you get to the "membership configuration" page,
about half way down you'll find the option to disable mail delivery.
If you set up a newsreader to go to news.gmane.org you can access this
list (and many, many others) as a newsgroup. You need to remain
subscribed in order to be able to post.

I'd keep Windows around. First, if something goes awry with your Linux
installation, you won't be dead in the water. Second, you can bet that the
day after you kill Windows some professor will mandate that you use some
piece of Windows-only software.

i agree. i was just about to nuke the winXP partition off of this laptop
when I got a new client. his website requires you to run IE. anyway life
is easier sometimes with windows around. Dual boot is the only way to go
if you just have one computer.
But I would make sure that you allow your Linux partition to be the
default boot in grub/lilo.
In fact since you're new to Linux I would say this is mandatory.
Unless you are really really really sure you NEVER want to do anything
with windows again and your absolutely sure that if sometime in your
life a boss/teacher/friend wants you to run a windows only application
that you are willing to lose that job/grade/whatever to keep your
promise that windows is never to be used.
that is a radical almost fundamentalist mentality. I'd like to be able
to never even hear the word windows again, but in reality i'm going to
have to deal with it and keep my XP partition around just in case. I
think the main point is that you don't browse the web and check email in
windows at first. then later you will find even more compelling reasons
to use Linux: programming is one that comes to mind.

M$ seems to assume every machine si running windows, so they don't
always mark the cd. And generally speaking, the windows drivers
don't work.

This is how mailing lists work. There may be workarounds like
periodicly visiting the archives, but due to spammers, its becoming
the norm to have to be subcribed in order to post, and if subscribed,
you get everything.
