Upgrading Production line PCs

Very a jolly big Hello to all of you,

I have potentially good news,

My bosses and I have decide to give Xplease a huge finger.
We are going to upgrade all of our bench PCs (28 of them) to 2 gig
celerons for the production line.
We want to load .... YES! FC2 or 1 if 2 isnt ready by then,

We have one problem I have been working on but no-one seems to know how
to fix,
Our in house app needs client connectivity to the ms-sql database.
mmmm!
Toughest thing for me yet.

All I can say is I really hope it will work.

You could always dump MSSQL in favour of PostgreSQL.

No flames required, Paul. Kindly grow up: whatever you may think of them, a 
large number of organizations use both PostgreSQL and MySQL for some 
sizable projects with good results. In our case, we use Oracle since we 
consider MS SQL to be 5th-rate FUD-ware. So opinions can and will vary.

In any event, the original poster likely does not care about either your 
opinion and mine, and posts commenting on the perceived quality of /any/ 
RDBMS are not useful to him. Her? I forgot. Only one person has actually 
responded with a useful comment that was on-topic.

So, do you know of a way to connect a Linux client to MS SQL or not? Help 
the guy, dammit.

their products with good results. Maybe if you took the time to read

Compared to Oracle, I'd say your close although I personally have never 
liked Oracles '' == null "feature".

Which may well indicate a paucity of OSS options (unless client apps are 
Java) which is why I mooted the idea of DB migration

I think the poster meant you could replace MS SQL with PostgreSQL. 
Though this does depend on if T-SQL was used instead of standard SQL. 
T-SQL is MS's stored procedure language similar to how Oracle has
PL/SQL.  You could port the stored procedures to pg/sql, though that is
something that could take time and depend on how large/complex Xalt is
and an application.

And if you were wondering how to literally dump an MS SQL Server DB. 
You can do it from the SQL Server Enterprise Manager.  You can export to
any ODBC database or to a CSV file if you wanted.

As other posters have pointed out, there would probably be some re-coding 
involved. Obviously we can't know how much effort would be involved.

You mention a custom app in another thread (Xalt?). How are you planning 
to run this under Fedora? Are you going to re-write it for Linux or 
attempt to run it under Wine or VMWare?

Manager folk that are on this list should think about the risks of
vendor specific applications.

Database and many other applications commonly include vendor specific
extensions that tie you to down.  Once you are tied to a vendor your
list of options gets shorter, expenses go up and your leverage to get
something fixed shrinks.  ALL software has these issues, open software
helps because things are not hidden.

Standards are your friend.

For the initial poster there is not enough information to respond.

There are a couple of components:
	user interface
	backend database
	back end reporting
	back end backup

In some cases the "user interface" part can be scoped and addressed
quickly once you know how to access the "backend database".  It just
depends on the functionality, design and complexity.  I have see cases
where all the complexity and security was in the client.  Granting
"back end" access to a perl script quickly was trouble.

The "back end backup" may be the easy place to begin.  By backing up
the primary data to an alternate data base vendor product things like
"back end reporting" can be migrated to the mirror.  Backend backup,
mirroring and reporting efforts can clarify much of the data structure
issues and questions.

I use perl sybase module to connect to MS SQL 7 or 2000. It has worked
reliably for me for several years. Check out this article it should give
you some pointers if you want to give it a shot. Feel free to contact me

the unix odbc tools for that.
