stupid spamassassin tricks

slugging through an awkward issue with spamassassin on my home server.

I am using fetchmail to get mail from my ISP - who in essence, has
already accepted delivery.

I have an email in my box which fetchmail keeps retrieving and
spamassassin is rejecting it - which is kind of an endless loop.

Specifically, I am running spamassassin & spamass-milter (milter via
sendmail).

I currently have the following options to spamd set...

# cat /etc/sysconfig/spamassassin
SPAMDOPTIONS="-d -c -a -m5 -H -L -x -u smmsp"

hoping that the '-L' option would serve the purpose...it hasn't

Any suggestions? Right now, it is only 1 email but these things have a
way of snowballing.

Why not just use procmail as the means to filter your e-mail.

Set up a ~/.procmail file, with the following:

# Scan with SpamAssasin
:0 fw
# This sets: "X-Spam-Status: Yes"
# First setting only scans e-mails < 256k bytes
* < 256000
| /usr/bin/spamc -f


I happen to use postfix instead of sendmail, but I am doing the same
thing, using fetchmail to get the e-mail from two ISP accounts. I filter
them through SA (I also use clamassassin to filter via ClamAV) via
procmail.

This sets the proper header in the e-mails and I then use my mail app
client to get the e-mails from /var/spool/UserName with a filter on the
appropriate headers.

I also have the following SA options set:

SPAMDOPTIONS="-d -c -L -m2 -H"

Quick correction, that should be:

~/.procmailrc

left off the last two letters.

You might not actually need the source code at all. Most properly-
written drivers can be built on FC3 using the build data supplied with
the kernel RPM at: /lib/modules/`uname -r`/build

Otherwise you can follow the guide in the release notes (open
file:///usr/share/doc/fedora-release-3/RELEASE-NOTES-x86-en.html and
search for "kernel source code"). You can find the version of the kernel
you are running using the command "uname -r".

What version of the kernel are you running?
"uname -a" will give that to you.

http://download.fedora.redhat.com/pub/fedora/linux/core/updates/3/SRPMS/

has all the latest sources and you would select the appropriate one for
your kernel.

I would suggest that you update to the latest (yum update) then get the
matching source tree for it which would be
kernel-2.6.10-1.741_FC3.src.rpm

Here we go again. Apparently the original poster has not read the
RELEASE NOTES. 

That aside, "kernel-xx-src.rpm is the rpm source code which can be used
to compile the kernel-sourcecode-2.6.10-1.741_FC3.noarch.rpm.

If the source tree is required (not just lib/modules/kernel-xx) then the
interim step is required to create an rpm that will install the source
tree with all of the FC3 patches applied.

If I'm not explaining that well, please help me out.

yeah understood about procmail - I just migrated off procmail onto
cyrus-imapd and sieve

The problem wasn't with local delivery anyway - it was being rejected
before it ever got that far and with fetchmail grabbing it from ISP that
had already received it - rejecting it at that point becomes an exercise
in '101 best ways to create mail loops with your mail server hall of
fame'

SpamAssassin is not the one rejecting the emails, it must be 
spamass-milter.  So setting options for spamd is not going to help you. 
  I'd remove -L, and let it do non-local tests too (obviously, when 
running fetchmail you do have internet connection up and running). 
Check settings for spamass-milter.  Since spam emails are already 
delivered to your ISP, and than transferred to your PC, you might as 
well simply filter them out (to separate folder, or /dev/null), instead 
of rejecting them.

bingo - spamass-milter was rejecting them with a default setting of '-r
15' and this was a big score email. I set it to 100  

and removed the -L from spamassassin (it was worth the try).

I really like cyrus-imapd and sieve by the way

One option would to use fetchmail's "mda" option to have it deliver the
mail directly via procmail instead of going through your MTA. This would
effectively bypass spamassassin and your mail could be delivered.

add to fetchmailrc:
mda "/usr/bin/procmail -d %T -f %F"

Of course, you would also lose the benefit of spamassassin for the mail
you retrieved this way.

Are you sure it's spamassassin that's rejecting messages?  My money 
would be on your configuration of the spamass-milter 
(-r parameter).

I am sure others will have already commented but spamassassin does not
reject anything.  It simply scores the incoming message.  You must use
other tools to reject based on that score.  In this case probably
spamass-milter is doing the reject on the message.
