There are such tools for KDE/Konqueror, do a search on kde.apps for "tube"  
and for Firefox MediaPlayerConnectivity plugin may do this:

ffmpeg -i get_video.flv -r 24 -ab 56 -ar 22050 -b 500 -s 320x240 out.avi

works fine.

I just discovered one called democracy player. It kind of combines the p2p 
system with a media player/recorder function. Seems to work well, but my 
experience is limited to a single session.

I remember using something similar, but the resulting video looks much 
crappier than the original .flv

I found

ffmpeg -i input.flv -ar 48000 -ac 2 output.mpg

giving much better result, probably because there is no rescaling...

Crap. I get this error which isn't found with google. 
ffmpeg: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/libavcodec.so.51: undefined
symbol: NeAACDecOpen

Anyone seen this one? Ric

By the way, I got no problem when building it from a tarball on my laptop.
That´s what I have:
[root@Arbusto Desktop]# ls | grep ffmpeg
ffmpeg-export-2007-01-22
ffmpeg-export-snapshot.tar.bz2

Odd. I have both

/usr/lib/libavcodec.so.51
/usr/lib/libavcodec.so.51.30.0

but don't have ffmpeg-devel installed

rpm -q ffmpeg-devel
package ffmpeg-devel is not installed
