Sorry, I didn't follow this thread so far maybe missed sth, but I
remember to read about a problem with DRI after some recent updates.

Is your machine fully up2date, resp. what version of 'module-init-tools'
is installed?

$ rpm -q module-init-tools

I am fully updated with the base, extras, updates-released, livna, and
freshrpms repositories via yum;

$ rpm -q module-init-tools
module-init-tools-3.2-0.pre9.0.FC4.4

That seems to be as up-to-date as is available.

Next step after this would be to look at your /var/log/Xorg.0.log and
see if the X fglrx module has any messages for you.  Dmesg output
might be indicative as well.
