Why does "yum remove foo" try to remove every package
using anything required by foo?
Surely the rational strategy would be to leave anything
required by another package?

As far as I can see, "yum remove foo" removes foo,
and also everything that foo depends on.
Then it removes everything that depends on the things already removed.
And so ad infinitum.
I would have thought it would be more logical
to leave anything required by another package.
Of course anything that requires foo should be removed.
But that is a different matter.

Yum installed the foo dependencies. If no other package requires those
dependencies yum removes them. If that is not the case then it is a
bug.
Of course anything that requires foo should be removed.
But that is a different matter.

?
If not, running:
rpm -q --requires package-yum-wanted-to-remove
will tell you whether yum is doing the right thing according to how the
application/library has been packaged.
If it is in fact doing the wrong thing, either yourself or someone else
will need a repeatable example to make a bug report at
bugzilla.redhat.com.
Sometimes a package is a meta-package whose job it is to install a heap
of sub packages.
eg: xorg-x11-drivers installs xorg-x11-drv-* so that all drivers will be
available should the hardware get changed. This means if you want yum to
uninstall one of the -drv-* packages, since it is required by -drivers,
yum then adds -drivers to the remove list which then requires the
removal of the rest of the -drv-* subpackages, and so on.
The above example can be worked around {although the Fedora developers
recommend all -drv-* stay installed}, by removing the meta-package first
{xorg-x11-drivers}, then any individual -drv-* that you are sure you
wont need.

Unfortunately I don't remember.
Whatever it was has disappeared from /var/cache/yum/...
But what I did was "yum install foo".
Then I decided that was the wrong foo,
so I said "yum remove foo",
and it wanted to remove 325 packages.
Sometimes a package is a meta-package whose job it is to install a
heap
of sub packages.
I don't think foo was anything esoteric.
But as I said I have forgotten exactly what it was.

What you say makes sense. What is annoying though is the following.
First you yum install foo and get some of its dependencies are
installed.
Second you do a yum remove foo and these same dependencies are not
removed.

I am not sure what yum does or doesn't do, but it seems to me what it should
do to remove foo is remove any thing foo needs which is NOT needed by
anything else. It should also remove anything which needs foo. Not sure what
else you could do really.

You can use the package-cleanup tool to list packages that nothing
depends on. This command will print a list of such packages:
$ package-cleanup --leaves
You could feed that to yum to remove those packages:
$ yum remove $(package-cleanup --leaves)

Yeah, my list from package-cleanup is long. Hopefully anyone that was
running this would check the output before running it via yum, or

It's the other way round. yum removes every package that _requires_
(something provided by) foo; or requires something provided by
something that requires something provided by foo; and so on.
