Non-YouTube videos don't work in F15

A few weeks ago I upgraded from Fedora 13 to Fedora 15.  This was an
on-line upgrade (using preupgrade) not a fresh install.  Not
surprisingly, several things are broken.  This is an AMD Athlon 64
machine with 2GB of RAM.

Initially, I couldn't get any videos to work, but a web search led me
to a solution for YouTube videos so they are fine, but non-YouTube
videos come up with white or black screen and no controls, nada.  This
is while running Firefox.

What do I need to look for?

Sounds to me like you're trying to shove an i386 plugin into your 64 bit  
Firefox.

Not going to work.

Sounds to me like you have the i386 plugin installed. Then you've thrown the  
x86_64 beta flash plugin at Firefox. So now Firefox has two of them.  
Hilarity ensues.

With your 64 bit Firefox, uninstall flash-plugin. Uninstall Adobe's yum repo  
rpm. It will not work. It's 32 bit only. Once the 64 bit flash is out of  
beta, perhaps Adobe will set up an x86-64 yum repo. But as of now, only the  
manually instaleld beta 64 bit plugin results in a working flash plugin in  
Firefox. Set Firefox to "Use Shockwave Flash" for SWF content.

I would also recommend uninstalling nspluginwrapper. Put just  
/usr/lib64/mozilla/plugins/libflashplayer.so, which should be the 64 bit  
libflashplayer.so. I rolled my own rpm to install it, to prevent something  
else from clobbering it, but you can just install it manually. Make sure the  
permissions on the .so are correct.

Okay, did all that.  Used the rc1 tarball from Adobe.  Now I can't see
the video portion of YouTube videos.  However I did notice something
that may be a clue.  While the video (sound only) is playing, I
clicked on the full-screen icon and a black screen came up with a
window title bar that says "GTK-Gnash", never no mind that in
Edit->Preferences->Applications I clicked on "Use Shockwave Flash".
Could it be that FF is locked into using Gnash regardless of what I
select?

Also noted is that after the video plays, the whirlygig in the center
of the viewing screen spins forever, presumably trying to load other
suggestions to view, and sucks about 70% of the CPU.

Absent better suggestions, I'm going back to the 32-bit wrapper.

Okay, so done.  Now when it tries to play a YT video, I get Adobe's
version of the BSOD that says "The Adobe Flash plugin has crashed."

Here are another couple of data points.  If I bring up YT with
Ephiphany, it plays them just fine.  AFAIK, the RC1 64-bit flash
player is the only one on the system.

If I try Konqueror, it reports I don't have a Flash plugin.

Another alternative that might be an option with youtube.
Go to http://youtube.com/html5
then joing the html5 trial that will use WebM for displaying videos.

Doesn't solve the flash issue for everything, but it seems to get 
most videos to work without having to jump thru hoops..

After much screwing around with it, things are working now.  Based on
my experience, here are the steps that worked.

- Download the 64-bit Flash player from Adobe.  I got the RC1
  version.  Then do these as root:

cd /
tar xzvf <wherever>/flashplayer11_rc1_install_lin_64_090611.tar.gz
chown root:root libflashplayer.so
chmod 755 libflashplayer.so # didn't know it had to be executable earlier.
mv libflashplayer.so /usr/lib64/mozilla/plugins/

- It was still failing because it was using gnash-plugin even though
  I'd selected "Use Shockwave Flash" in
Edit->Preferences->Applications
  for "Shockwave Flash file", so I

yum remove gnash-plugin

Now I get audio and video for YouTube stuff as well as non-YT stuff,
and as a bonus, I get my Live365 audio again.

I am a happy camper.  Oh, and the 32-bit stuff is still installed, so
it will coexist with the 64-bit player.

Well, the long and the short of it is that the 64 bit plugin works just fine  
for me.

You can easily check what you end up running in epiphany by right clicking  
on the flash window while it's running. If it's truly the Adobe flash  
plugin, right clicking should open a menu with very obvious contents.

If you have the Flash plugin working in Epiphany, but not in Firefox, that  
suggests to me that your Firefox install itself is unstable. Perhaps a  
conflict with other plugins you have installed.

The 32-bit wrapped plugin works fine for me on 64-bit Fedora (including 64-bit
Firefox). There's a section on the Flash wiki page on how to make it work:

I trust Leigh, and used this repo until recently, but got tired of Adobe putting
out a 64-bit plugin and then either yanking it away or ignoring it for months.
So now I'm waiting for Adobe to put it in their own repo, which up to now
they've never done, as a sign of taking it more seriously. The 32-bit wrapped
plugin has always worked fine for me so I'm using that for now.

I tried installing that with no improvement.

So, you must be referring to the 64 bit plugin.

but your audio and/or video. The flash plugin doesn't like something else  
grabbing the audio, on my box. Or it grabs the audio itself, and keeps it  
for a while. If new mail lands in my gmail box, and the timing is right,  
both the flash plugin and the gmail manager plugin will want the audio, and  
lock up Firefox, tight. Have to kill it. That's about the only glitch I have  
to deal with, but otherwise it's WORKSFORME.
