In defense to the IT support persons that "seem intent
on preventing ...",  this is like walking into
someone's house and saying that you want to add your
own setup, use their electricity, phone line for a
modem, etc. in their house without asking.
If these IT Support persons are THE support for the
place you are working, it only stands true that you
need to work with THEM.  THEY are more than likely to
be the ones who are providing the IP number for the
range they are provided by the University.  THEY are
the ones who are probably activating the data jack
ports.  There are many Depts. in a University that
have their own support (like ours), and when someone
comes in and demands something, like they own the
place, that doesn't make good PR.  Additionally, THAT
Dept. sets the standards of what THEY support and will
support.  If you choose to go outside that support,
than it only stands to reason that they will tell you
that they will not support you if you have any issues.
 The University is the fallback support.
Just because a person CAN do something because they
have the capability, doesn't always mean that one
SHOULD do it.  Here's an example: I CAN drive through
a stop sign, but SHOULD I really do that?  I CAN buy a
new <insert name here> computer that is not supported
by said Dept., but SHOULD I?  Do you choose to not get
reliable support, or do you have to find someone else,
wasting your valuable, University fund-generating
time?
If you think outside the box and put yourself in the
shoes of the persons who do the support, you may
understand.
I deal with this all the time, and will work
willingly, and happily, work with a PHD-person if they
reciprocate.

Except the house, the electricity etc.. all belong to the company, not
IT.  IT is supposed to service and enable the people in the house.

Yes, Like a janitor.  It is a "SERVICE" department.  That why IT
has to have someone on call 24x7.

Having worked both in and outside of IT, I understand the "ownership"
point of view but have found that in organization where that is the
prevailing IT attitude there is always an "US" vs "THEM" perception
which ends up hurting the company and productivity.

Of course this isn't helped by some end users who seem to deliberately 
not try to learn how to use their equipment.   :)

Except in this case, the local IT department has placed a stop sign 
in the middle of a straight, empty stretch of four lane highway
with no intersection or any thing else around for twenty miles.

They are just spouting policy without good reason and demonstrating
either extreme ignorance (shhd = server) or duplicity.

They can only get away with this where their management is not technical
or their management is more interested in building an empire then
providing service.

Frambuffer console for FC3

Sorry to bother you with another question. 

This is the fresh installation of FC, so I want to make everything satisfying. 
By default, FC3 starts up without frambuffer console support. How should I 
enable it? 

I am using the pre-compiled kernel coming with the FC3 CD. It seems the 
required config options were enabled.

CONFIG_VGA_CONSOLE=y
CONFIG_MDA_CONSOLE=m
CONFIG_DUMMY_CONSOLE=y
CONFIG_FRAMEBUFFER_CONSOLE=y
# CONFIG_FONTS is not set
CONFIG_FONT_8x8=y
CONFIG_FONT_8x16=y

My video display is supported by a ATI Fire GL 8800 video card.  I found the 
following two lines in the kernel config file,
CONFIG_FB_RADEON=m
CONFIG_FB_RADEON_I2C=y

So, I think I don't need to recompile my kernel to enable FB console support, 
do I? What should I do? Pass some arguments to grub?

control IP addresses. My sin is that because a lack of office space, my 
office was located in the data center. The data center IT people have no 
intention of helping or cooperating. Their solution would be for me to 
let them install Windows XP on the machine and they would control ALL 
aspects (even down to the screen resolution). I would not be able to run 
the software I need to run but that  doesn't really matter to them.

Rick,

Welcome to the real world of University computing ;-)

We have a similar setup here with the University IT guys owning the 
network and only supporting Windoze NT ( not even XP ).  They have been 
trying to go to a private network for the last 3 years but still 
haven't managed it. So we have a mixture of public and private at the 
moment.

At least they allocate us, the Comp. Sci. Dept. a block of IP addresses 
that we can the allocate ourselves. So we use these to dual boot all 
the student machines and look after them ourselves.
