I guess that the second means I don't have hardware aceleration.
What does the first one mean?

Would this sort of thing cause mplayer and ffplay to freeze?
Each of them last a couple before seconds before freezing.
ffplay keeps a little over 1% of the cpu.
Don't remember about mplayer.
The card is not the same kind as the original.
A year or so ago, I destroyed the original installing a disk drive.
I've not deliberately done anything to edit
my graphics infrastructure since then.
I have installed Fedora 9 since then.

Rebooting has mplayer and ffplay running again.
I even have sound.
mplayer occasionally claims my system is too slow.
This is likely because I still have software rendering?

Not true. Software rendering refers to the display of 3D objects in
OpenGL. Unless you have a very strange setup, mplayer won't be using
OpenGL to display video data.
I've got a box with a geforce 5200 LE, and it displays video just fine
if I use the "evil" Nvidia driver. The "nouveau" driver (which you
probably have) isn't quite ready for prime time.
I get the driver from the Nvidia website, but it can also be yummed from
the rpmfusion-nonfree repo.

Life is better now.
I wrote a bit soon.
Since getting the nvidia driver, suspend to disk no longer works.
When I try to unsuspend, the machine goes through part of
the startup sequence, but eventually the screen goes dark.

Again, I stand corrected. My nouveau experience was with an earlier
version than the one shipped currently. The F11 version seems to be
working fine, playing 720P H264 video on a slow AMD cpu.

I haven't been able to use any quirks.
pm-suspend gives me:
System does not support suspend sleep.
I haven't been able to figure out which file to edit to use a quirk that way.
It's possible that the only problem is that
the backlight on my AOC LCD doesn't turn on.
If I can't get a quirk to do it, is there a way to do it manually?
I could do a cntrl-alt-F4 and type blind if I knew what to type.
Since I can ssh into it, I expect that would work.
