Cause of disappearing mount points in FC5

Hi,

what could be the cause of disappearing mounted drives? I have a
"vfat" & "ntfs" drive mounted in my FC5 box but sometime after
booting, the mount point disappears suddenly without any trace. I am
suspecting the hardware problem but when I boot from windows these
drive is working fine. Have anyone came across similar problem? any
advice?

Further information,

I mounted the drive manually as root and it mounted without any complain.
I guess the drive is mounting successfully after it suddenly disappers
means somthing is causing it to unmount automatically. What could
cause that?
Any suggestions please?

Power management?  Automounter?

If the drive is mounted on /data do you see it with df ?
If not, can you do ls -l /data (wait a moment) and see it respond?

no idea. if its the power management, I guess it should also show same
behavior with my harddrive with ext3 drive where FC5 is installed.

no nothing? when it disappears, its completely gone from scene. I have
symbolic link to my home directory and these too show blank. However I
can remount it manually after that happens with root permission. These
brings the mount point back but without read or write permission to
general users.

by the way I have mounted these drive with write permission to users in fstab:
====================
/dev/hdd1               /mnt/common             vfat
rw,defaults,umask=0000 0 0
/dev/hdb1               /mnt/gameiso            ntfs
ro,defaults,umask=0222 0 0
====================

Another clue I found is:

I have some movies stored in my /mnt/common. It happens (usually but
not sure that it happens everytime) when I play these movies with
mplayer.


Any Clue?????

Hmm. Could you do a
ls -lart /var/log
just after the mount has gone away. That will show you if there have
been any log files that have been modified recently. Then please do a
tail -20 /var/log/messages
(and similarly for any other files that have been modified recently).

At a guess, I'd say that there's either something wrong with the drive,
something wrong with the cable, or possibly with the motherboard.

Out of interest, what are /dev/hda and /dev/hdc? Is there anything else
on those two IDE channels?

Incidentally, you don't need the "defaults" in /etc/fstab, as long as
there's something else there. (You need *something* for the mount
options -- "defaults" is just a "do nothing" word to put there if you
haven't got any other mount options).

Since I posted this message its not happening. Its very random. I will
try this when it happens.

I am guessing that it has something to do with drive or cable. My vfat
drive is and old 20GB seagate drive which I just used it as storage of
all sort of temp things, while FC is installed in 7200rpm 40GB drive.
I don't know if mixture of different speed could cause this. By the
way this is dual boot system and widows xp show no such signs and
symptoms which FC has been showing (this is where I got confused
more).

yes I have three drives (1st drive is WIN/FC5 dual boot. one is ntfs
and other is vfat drive) and 1 DVD drive.

Hi all,

I tried chaning my IDE cable but problem persisted. Recently I updated
my BIOS and problem seems to go away. I don't have that behavior now
for few days. I hope this is it but don't know when it will strike
back again.

This is not very clear according to your further information: did you
mount your windows partition manually, then reboot? In that case there
is no mystery at all: if you want your partitions mounted permanently,
you need to add this to the fstab.

Have you looked in /var/log/messages? Any disk problems that cause the 
disk to be unmounted will be logged here.
