Error 15: File not found after FC 5 Install

I installed the 5-CD set of Fedora Core 5 and within 5 seconds after I press 
Enter on the GRUB menu, it displays these messages:

Booting 'Fedora Core (2.4.22-1.2115.nptl)'

root (hd0,0)
 Filesystem is ext2fs, partition type 0x83
kernel /vmlinuz-2.4.22-1.2115.nptl ro root=LABEL=/

Error 15: File not found

Press any key to continue...

Whenever I press any key, it takes me back to the GRUB menu.  When I press 
Enter from GRUB, it takes me through the error sequence I describe above.

Maybe it's just me, but that looks like a Fedora Core 1 install, not 
Core 5. If this is the case, your question is probably best asked on the 
fedora-legacy list [1].

I think he has the same problem that I had earlier with upgrading a machine
from FC 4 to FC5.  He's upgrading from FC1 to FC5, and the installer didn't
update his grub.conf file to point to the new kernel.

To fix this, boot from the cd and select rescue mode.  Edit grub.conf to point
to the FC5 kernel that is installed on the hard drive.  Reboot as normal and
all will be well.

    Nope. I was stupid enough to try and upgrade a FC2 with FC5 and the 
upgrade went real good. It went to completion and then it said reboot 
and come back up. I did so and there is NO WAY in HECK this thing will 
come up. There is a mixture of FC2 and FC5 in /boot/ and /boot/grub/ and 
I spent a few hours trying to get it going and gave up. I had lots of 
Error 15: File not found and other non-helpful error messages.

    This mess I plan to put on a portable hard drive and take it over to 
Computer Engineering at NMSU and let them use it as a final exam.

This is *exactly* why an *upgrade* is not supported.
It is impossible for the developers to know exactly what the
configuration (Version, Kernel, update status, packages installed, etc)
of your machine is at the time the upgrade is installed. Thus a clean
install/upgrade cannot in any way be assured.

To be certain the new install will work first time it should be done as
a clean install, wiping out all prior OS parts to do it.

There is nothing wrong in simply having such a "mixture".  I have such a
"mixture" on my machine, as do other people.  Some of the grub stanzas
refer to kernels that boot to an FC3 volume, others refer to kernels that
boot to an FC5 volume.  /boot is a seperate partition from /.  All that
matters when booting is that the grub commands are sensible and that the
kernel and its ramdisk are there and the target volume has the rest of the
OS.

I copied my FC3 partition, got the copy working, and upgraded the copy to
FC5.  Earlier, I had done a clean install of FC5t3 on that partition.  Both
worked fine.  /boot contains kernels for both partitions.

The previously installed kernels, etc. are not relevent to the installer,
which doesn't use them, or upgrade them, or do anything except install a
new kernel and ramdisk and muck with grub.conf.

Clean installs also fail sometimes.

I have installed the driver for intel ipw2200bg
[root@laptotAdel ~]# rpm -qa | grep ipw
ipw2200-firmware-3.0-8.at
ipw2200-kmdl-2.6.16-1.2111_FC4-1.1.2-42.rhfc4.at


When I try to active the device, the system tells me that the ipw2200 
driver is not installed and it will not activate the device?
can you help plz

One thing you can try is to run, as root, "depmod -a", and then try
again. The post install script for the ipw2200-kmdl RPM should run
it, but it is possible that it does not. It is also run at boot
time, witch is why a reboot also tends to fix this kind of problem,
even though a reboot is not necessary.

Here on FC5, `rpm -qa|grep ipw` only shows:
ipw2200-firmware-3.0-1.lvn5

The ipw2200 and several ieee80211* kernel module are loaded, and I connect to
wifi wep/wpa LANs using the networkmanager applet (GNOME). NetworkManager
service must run too.

comes with the FC4 standard kernel.

locate ipw | grep `uname -r`

should return the path to the ipw2200.ko module
