Is wireless support any better with FC5?

I'm on FC4 now and have been using ndiswrapper with a Broadcom card for
some time: Broadcom Corporation BCM4306 802.11b/g Wireless LAN
Controller (rev 03). Recently my DLink DI-624 router died and I just got
the replacement. Now I can't get FC4 to reconnect. I can scan the
wireless network and see it, but I can't connect to it. 

I've also tried two PCMCIA cards, a DLink DWL-G650 with the Atheros
chipset (I've never got this to work) and a CompUSA card with an unknown
chipset (doesn't work either). 

I've also never been able to get WEP to work, so I've been stuck using
no encryption and filtering MACs. I would filter MACs anyway, but would
really like to use WEP, even though it's not the greatest security.

All three of these NICs work fine when I boot to Windows XP. 

So I'm wondering if FC5 improves anything. I've heard that SUSE is much
better at handling wireless, but I really like Fedora/Redhat. 

Any suggestions are appreciated.

For me FC5 has been an absolute nightmare for wifi.  Everything worked
perfectly for me with a orinico supported pcmcia wifi card in FC4. 
Since upgrading, I can't get it to work at all.  The card is detected,
yet it never can connect to anything on any network.

I've been on FC5 for a while on a Tosh Tecra M2. The on-board Intel
PRO2100b is working great, as is the Linksys WPC54GSv2 PCMCIA card
(using ndiswrapper). If anything, the PCMCIA support seems to be
light-years ahead of where is was last time I was unfortunate enough to
need it :-)

Must be nice.  I can't get an in kernel 'supported' driver to work
right in FC5.

I just did get it working here, on an hp lappy with a broadcom 4318 
chipset in it.  I used a combination of kwifimanager and hand editing 
of various files to get ndiswrapper running with the drivers from the 
XP install also on that lappy.

I used a tool called wap11gui (cause thats my access radio) to generate 
the keys, and applied those to the keys-wlan0 file in network-scripts, 
disabled eth0 on booting, set the ESSID strings to match on both ends 
of the radio path, and its working fairly well now.

kwifimanager apparently cannot write to the keys file or even to 
ifcfg-wlan0, so I had to do that bit by hand.  IMO kwifimanager, while 
pretty, needs more developent to be able to handle all that.

FWIW, system-config-network is a heck of a lot more broken than 
kwifimanager.  It may be able to properly setup an ethernet port, but 
don't EVER let it touch a wireless setup.  It knows nothing about 
ndiswrapper at setup time.

People having trouble with vz bouncing email to me should add the word
'online' between the 'verizon', and the dot which bypasses vz's

I'd say yes; I have an ipw2200 card which works great with FC5 (I
tested WPA, WPA2 and a Cisco VPN). But this depends a lot on your
hardware. You might want to check out this list:
http://live.gnome.org/NetworkManagerHardware .

Note that some drivers aren't in Fedora's (or Linus's) kernel; you
might have to manually download, compile and install the kernel
modules. Sometimes googling for the name of the driver and "rpm" will
find rpms for Fedora, too.

Did you install the madwifi driver?
rpm.livna.org has rpms.

Try running
  lspci -v
in a terminal, as root, with the card plugged in. The card should be
listed there and you might be able to figure out the type of its
chipset.

In general, I'd say don't give up so fast. If I got WPA2 to work with
my one nic, you should be able to get WEP working with three of them ;-)

"don't give up so fast" doesn't really apply in this case. I have
fought
with this thing A LOT in the past, especially WEP. Once I got it to a
point where I could at least connect with the internal broadcom card,
without WEP, I just accepted it. But now I can't get it to connect
anymore. The DLink router was replaced, but my laptop configuration
stayed the same. Wireless on Linux has by far been my biggest
frustration. 

I'm going to look into a driver for the Realtek 8185 card, but I won't
hold my breath.

Yes, I'm using that now, but cannot get a connection established. I
could before but since I got my replacement router I have not been able
to connect. Encryption is not turned on (never been able to get it to
work) and MAC filtering is turned on, but the NIC is allowed and works
from Windows.

I would agree that FC5 is better than FC4, but your experience is probably 
very much dependant on your hardware.

I have a Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 2100, and the ipw2100 driver is now in the 
kernel (Later FC4 kernels also have it). It appears rock solid (although the 
version in the current FC5 kernel is 1.1.3 and thus does not yet support WPA 
I think... WEP should be fine though.)

I also use NetworkManager, which I would also suggest is much more stable in 
FC5 than it was in FC4 - With this running things really did "just work" for 
me after installing FC5, which was not the case for FC4. I haven't had to do 
a single bit of network setup and the wireless connects fine, and plays well 
with my ethernet connection "Broadcom 4400 10/100BaseT"

I have Intel(R) PRO/WIreless 2200 and it works pretty fine with ipw2200. The 
only thing I had to do was to update the firmware. I also found out that I 
have some problems on newer kernels (after I do update), but it works pretty 
fine on the kernel supplied on FC5 installation CDs

Not sure about 2200, but with 2100 I tried getting WPA working with 
wpa_supplicant and NetworkManager. In the end I failed, I think because 
the current kernels come with 2100 v1.1.3 and I need the v1.2.x series ?

Anne, have you looked at ndiswrapper?  It allows you to use the wireless
win32 drivers under linux.  Therefore you gain all the capabilities
thereof, including WPA-PSK.  Livna maintains the ndiswrapper packages.

There is one caveat.  You have to recompile the kernel to raise the
stack level from 4 to 16.  They recommend at least 16 stacks for
win32/ndiswrapper drivers.  There may be someone out there that's
already packaged the latest FC5 kernel with 16k stacks.

BTW, subject change...you should pick up the latest copy of that UK
magazine, LinuxUser & Developer; they've got a section called "The Linux
Invaders", How free software took over Hollywood.  Over half the
magazine is themed about Linux in Hollywood; I figured you might find
that interesting.  It's issue #59 and it was still in Barnes & Nobles as
of last night.

linuxant.org holds the 16k stacks versions of the fedora kernels, and
they are current up to kernel 2080.  They also hold the src, and devel
rpms.  I am recompiling that version of src, then recompiling
ndiswrapper afterwards.  Hopefully that'll work.

Would anyone have suggestions for the best supported/performance
Wireless Notebook(pcmcia) Network Adapter to use in FC5.  I have two
types and neither work or work well.

One is a Linksys Wireless G with Speedboost WPC54GS V1 and does not work
at all. and the other is a really old leArity 802.11b which works, but
without WEP encryption.

I would say, tentatively, try a dlink pcmcia wireless adapter with an
atheros chipset in combination with the win32 drivers and ndiswrapper.
That seems to be the most functional combination going.  Bear in mind
tho that my experience is mostly with desktop stuff and not laptops.

There is a compatibility list somewhere in relation to the ndiswrapper
driver.  I don't have it handy right now but if no one posts anything
I'll try to get one sent to the list here in the next 24 hours.

I've not had alot of luck with linksys equipment, it seems the quality
is of a cheap nature.

I did not have to do that to use the XP driver bcmwl5 with ndiswrapper 
here.

'online' between the 'verizon', and the dot which bypasses vz's

What model card have you got, and what's the chipset?  I'm interested.
It would be nice to get a Super-G capable card that works with the
standard kernel.

I use mostly atheros chipset stuff and I've never been able to get a
kernel to work that was default with 4 stacks.  I either get a lockup or
the box reboots.  I have read that the stack requirements for the win32
drivers naturally vary from product to product.

I also use KDE, and just for the record NetworkManager works fine with 
KDE. The previous FC4 NM applet had some icon issues with KDE, but the 
latest one with FC5 works perfectly. Personally, I think the gnome 
NetworkManager applet is better than anything available at the moment 
for KDE (kwifimanager only does wireless no ? Networkmanager does ALL 
connections).

I am keeping any eye out for a KDE frontend for NetworkManager, which 
gather is in the pipeline...

No because super-g is an atheros proprietary feature. If you want ~100Mb/s 
you really need to wait for 802.11n standard equipment.

Between a host on the other side of a g-only ap and in intel 2915 I can do 
currently do ~22Mb/s of actual data throughput, switching over to A pushs 
that out to around 24Mb/s.

Just wanted to post an update here. I've installed FC5, and although I
have some other issues, my wireless card is working great using bcm43xx-
fwcutter with encryption. No ndiswrapper or madwifi.

It will be in the -netdev kernel (http://fedoranews.org/blog/?p=965).
The standard Fedora kernel is likely to have it only after upstream
merges it.

James, I'm just trying out foresight linux and the wireless support
looks pretty good. It looks like it's built on fedora, or maybe is
quite similar. I tried it because it is gnome.

If you have more than 256M of ram, grab the latest iso (0.9.4mr5) and
give it a go.
