pb with police (ISO8859-15)

Hi all,

I'am a french user....In french there are many accent on word !!!

When i send a mail with accent on word...my friends which are use
WINXXXX(No one is perfect) see strange symbol. Is there any way to solve
that ????

I'm not an expert (but I play one on TV) :-)
This sounds like a content-type: or similar header problem.

Either your e-mail client is not setting up the correct headers, or the
recipient e-mail client doesn't have the needed font installed to display
the characters with the accents etc.

Your friends must use the same character set as you do, regardless of
whether they're on Windows or Linux or Macintosh or TTDs.  Since there's
no mapping between the accents on your characters and their character
set, they'll see weird characters as the system tries to guess what's
appropriate.

Problem probably is either Windows/Outlook doesn't understand UTF-8, or
this happens because you did not explicitly set a content type (see your
headers, on one of your mails it says "Content-Type: text/plain;
charset=") and Windows assumes ISO-8859-1(5). For Evolution you can set
Tools->Settings->Composer Preferences->Character Set to ISO-8859-15.
Content-type will then automatically be set to that value if you use
accented characters (it will stay empty if you just use plain ASCII like
with this message). It might even work with setting UTF-8 explicitly.

You can change global settings by editing /etc/sysconfig/i18n. Replace
UTF-8 with ISO-8859-15. If you have no need for other than Western
characters this will do. I was thinking about doing this myself, because
this UTF-8 encoding only makes my system slower, and I don't use other
characters than Western anywhere.

Don't get me wrong, I think the support for UTF-8 is great, but using it
as a default seems overkill on my system. At least I can read your UTF-8
messages :) .

Actually, for French, Spanish, Portuguese, German, Scandinavian,
Icelandic, etc, users who do not have an additional need for more exotic
languages, this may well be the best thing to do. It immediately solves
a lot of annoying problems that have come up with the recent default
choice of UTF-8, like less not displaying ISO Latin 1 or Latin 9 files -
including man files - properly, xemacs refusing dead keys for circumflex
or umlaut, etc.

Maybe it should even be an option, if not the default option, when
installing Fedora. And a better support for character encoding options
would certainly be welcome - Main Menu -> System Settings -> Language or
-> Keybord, which are the places a naive user may be expected to look,
provide nothing of the kind. I fully expect that the information is
available somewhere in the depths of the documentation, but most users
are more interested in working *with* their system than *on* it. I had
been looking for months, on and off, for the proper way to change the
default locale until I read you message - thanks a lot!

I tried that and then it work under X, but under console the messages
are now in english....

May you send me your /etc/sysconfig/i18n file

Evolution is tricky about this, as it uses unicode, not iso-8859-X, as
default encoding scheme. Change it to the correct iso-xxx and see what
happens. In fact, try it manually, on a message window, on menu
edit-character encoding.
