Turn X Windows off

    I have the latest Nvidia for this computer and it is a run file. No 
problem there but it will only work if X windows is off. Is there a 
simple way to put yourself in level 3 and then run the thing in a directory?

    Now it seems the rescue CD might be the way...

Just open a terminal window in X
and type, as root, init 3
Easy. Run the script as I mentioned privately. Once done in text just
cntl-alt-del to reboot if you saw no errors during the install process.

As root:

init 3

will drop you to init level 3.

To turn of X windows type "init 3".   Which will stop X and put you at a 
login prompt.  Login, do the install then probably a reboot or "init 5".

    Thank you! I tried the darn rescue CD and everything that could go 
wrong did! :-)
