Yes so it seems that fc2 is ok on Intel boards, however Karsten gave me some
pointers yesterday about how he set up his K8V mb with sata and fc2 which he
said worked but not for me.

I also don't agree that it has anything to do with bios etc as fc1 and other
distros install on this mb with my initial bios config so I have to say that
it is fc2 and not my mb or bios config.

Maybe I need to pass it some boot parameters but I can not see how fc1 will
install to my sata drive but fc2 wont, anyway that is all pointless now as I
now have a dead mb after a failed bios flash %£$£^&&*%%$ and it is only 5
days old

Jeff,

Asus supposedly has a remedy for this...haven't had the misfortune to
need the procedure but it would be worth a try.

"The CrashFree BIOS 2 feature now includes the BIOS auto-recovery
function in a support CD. Users can reboot their system through the
support CD when a bootable disk is not available, and go through the
simple BIOS auto-recovery process. 
ASUS motherboards now enable users to enjoy this protection feature
without the need to pay for an optional ROM"

I might also suggest asking on the AMD64 list...someone there may have
some suggestions.

Hi Kas

Thanks for that however the system is "dead" very dead so will not boot from
floppy or cd. It was while using the ASUS EZ Flash bios update facility <alt
+f2> at boot that destroyed the bios. So as much as I would like to try the
restore from cd or floppy I cant, unless you know a way to?

The manual certainly implies that there is a protected boot block so
that, even with a corrupted BIOS EEPROM, you should be able to boot the
CD loader and get the original bios from the CD.  Since your original
flash attempt didn't work, and apparently your further attempts at this
procedure don't either, I would suspect that there is something
seriously amiss on the MB and it needs to be RMAed.  I've flashed my K8V
from 1002 to 1004 to 1005 without any problems...although I admit I've
crossed my fingers, eyes and anything else handy whilst doing so.

I would prolly clear CMOS (including removing the battery just to be
absolutely sure) to make certain you didn't have something there that
the loader was looking at that confused it...shouldn't be looking that
early but BIOS is a black art...and they generally get it wrong...after
5 attempts they still can't get BIOS to read my DIMMs SPD correctly.

What is "protected boot block" and what is RMAed? excuse the ignorance

You say I should still be able to but there is no drive to the screen and no
attempt to even read the bios etc.
Do you think that flashing the bios could damage a mb? I would not have
thought so, it is 5 days old with all components same age. It worked fine
until I flashed it.

I tried clearing CMOS, removing battery, removing all power including power
cables to board just to be sure that it cleared but it remains dead and no
attempt to read bios or drives, I must say I have flashed a few before but
never had one go dead on me.
I saved the existing bios to floppy and have the cd but they are no good if
I cant get it to read from them.

Tha same happened to me blank screen, no boot, nothing. (when going from
1006->1007) 


I put the original CD-ROM that came with the MB (inside there is a file
called k8v.rom or something alike) in the cd-rom unit and powered on
_while pressing_ ALT-F2, after a while (30 second maybe or more!) I
could see that it was reflashing from CD. 

Y reflashed again to 1007 using 1005.exe from asus download area.

I tried that (alt f2 and then powering on) I can not hear the dvd spinning
up as normal but the read led flashes for a while then switches off and the
system stays dead.

You mention 1005 1006 1007 but the only files I can find on the asus web
site is a kv8b1003.zip which has a K8VB.ami file which the manual says you
must rename K8VB.ROM before using with the EZ flash utility. Were are you
downloading these files from?

Flash memory is organized in blocks of various sizes depending on the
total size of the device.  When you flash bios, it is written a block at
a time and not all blocks within the eeprom need be reprogrammed...a
protected block would be one that is not overwritten by the flashing
procedure so that the original contents remain undisturbed.  Some
eeproms have a block fused so that once written, it cannot be changed
again.

RMA = return material authorization...you get an RMA number from the
vendor so that when returned, the vendor knows what's inside the box and
can route appropriately.

You hadn't used the eeprom write circuitry or the regulated programming
voltage going to the eeprom until you tried flashing...the defect didn't
show until you tried those "features".

No screen display says BIOS died...you should get a display from the
boot block even with a corrupted bios according to the Asus manual.
Whether the eeprom died because it was defective or because a problem on
the MB killed it, it is a problem for Asus and I would definitely return
the board to your vendor...since the eeprom did get written once in a
programmer somewhere, the indication is that the problem probably
originated on the motherboard...so I wouldn't attempt to flash that new
bios without thinking long and hard.

That will teach me to not look first...I now remember the warning about
not using EF Flash to update to v1004 (and 1005 although the message
says 1004) from earlier versions.  The warning really implies that EZ
Flash was borked in 1001,1002 and 1003 and it shouldn't be used...from
this I would then figure that the whole problem was caused by a
malfunctioning EZ Flash in your original BIOS.  My experience below
indicates that it still wasn't fixed in v1005 either.

Since v1001-3 EZ Flash apparently hoses BIOS, you may not be able to
bring this board up without an new BIOS...I would still be inclined to
RMA it if you can't get a display and a floppy won't boot.  However, if
you can get a floppy to boot, there is still hope...

Venturing forth where angels fear to tread, I just gave EZ Flash a try
using BIOS v1005 hoping to update to v1007.  EZ Flash just hungs after
reading the K8V.ROM file on my floppy and saying "Erasing ...." . 
Fortunately, it was lying and BIOS was still intact.  As I would expect
from Asus, they don't even list the K8V on the list of procedures to use
with various motherboards...so I used what I knew works...v1005 came
with the utilities needed...I modified patch.ini and put k8v1007.ami on
the floppy in place of 1005.ami and booted from there...1007 is running
now.

Just looked at the link you gave, it is for the K8V deluxe, I have a K8V not

usa.asus only has ver 1003 for the K8V, I downloaded from asus.tw which has
1003 and 1004
Either way I think that the problem lies with the fact that the EZ flash
utility is not quite right and nukes the bios. So hopefully the new bios
chip will solve the problem.

Hmmmm...the plain K8V doesn't show up at all on the USA site...but I
found it on the GB site and the specs do differ slightly...the Lan
controller is listed as a Marvel 88E1000 whereas the K8V has a 3c940
which may or not be equivalent...the 3c940 is based on the Marvel Yukon
IP but may use different vendor and device ids...and the raid controller
is an 20376 rather than the 20378 on the deluxe...both show up in hwdata
but you would have to consult the source code (or Alan Cox) to see if
this is a potential problem ...AFAIK you really ought to be using the
SATA controller on the VIA south bridge...unless they saved 10 cents by
deleting the connectors from the BoM.

Anyhow, I see that your bios versioning is different from that of my K8V
Deluxe...heaven only knows what else is different.

Hi Kas

I definitely think that there is a problem with the fc2 stuff that handles
the sata bits on my mb as my K8V and sata hd worked fine with fc1 and suse 9
except fc1 had problems with the Marvell 88E100 lan.
As far as I knew I was using the sata controller on the south bridge as I
can disable the onboard promise controller without it effecting the install
on fc1 and suse 9 and I kept my bios and set-up the same when I attempted
the fc2 install.
That tells me that fc2 is different in some way to fc1 and can no longer
handle the sata stuff on my board, why is beyond me and unfortunately you
are talking over my head when you start talking about consulting the source
code and BoM :-(
It still makes no sense to me why fc1 will install fine but fc2 crashes on
the same hardware set-up, my logic says that if my mb and the sata
controller was supported in fc1 then it surely must be in fc1, or am I
missing something.

hard drive (maxtor 200gb) it loads fine if I replace the sata hd with and

I think you'll find there's no sata driver - either ata or libata/scsi - for your
chipset.  This is where having Fedora developers looking at the list would be great.

Yes I agree, it definitely would seem as if there is no support for the sata chipset on my
board K8V, we can only hope that one of the more experienced users and developers will see
the post and look into it.

FC2 does not work on a ASUS K8V SE Deluxe MB either.  It has a Promise FastTrack 378
controller that is not even seen by FC2.  Anybody have any suggestions on how to get it to
work?
