Kernel snapshots and kernel versions

Hi all,

I this video:

Andrew Morton talks about some aspects of the linux kernel. Near the
end of the video, he talks about how to contribute and he says that
both Fedora and Open Suse provide -linus snapshots of the kernel.

I couldn't find this snapshots. Could any of you point me to the proper place?

My second question is: How far are the Fedora kernels from the
equivalent Vanilla ones? Andrew says it's okay to use Fedora/Open Suse
kernels to report problems. Does this means that these kernels are
very close to the vanilla version?

As a related question, I would like to know it it is possible to
install a vanilla kernel in Fedora without big problems. By big
problems I mean module loading problems (kernel version doesn't match,
etc..) and those things.

And taking into account that Fedora recommends to install the kernel
as a "normal" rpm package, is there any guide or howto to know how to
build an rpm from a vanilla kernel?

I saw the vanilla directory inside the BUILD directory when the kernel
sources are installed. Can I do something with that? Maybe comment out
the patch sections in the spec file to create a vanilla rpm package?

OK,

Thank you very much for the explanation. I knew about the patches but
I didn't know Andrew was meaning about them. I use to use Whitebox and
in some releases like WBEL 4 (RHEL 4 clone) the kernel was a very
strange hybrid between a 2.4 and a 2.6. My main concern to know if
there were similar things with the Fedora kernels.

In my original reply in which I stated that staying close with upstream 
is a goal, I also pointed out the above link which states the 
exceptions. If you don't want to read them, refrain from accusing people 
of lying.

If you want proprietary software by default, Fedora isn't suitable for 
you. Good luck in using something that meets your needs. Choice is great.

I dont need to go read url's, the fact remains they are not entirely like 
upstream, and i doubt a patch to make it work on fedora thats not needed 
to work on others will always be incorporated into the upstream software, 
maybe some might, but most do not, and the stripping etc, so you cant sit 
there and say the "distro as a whole", its simply not true because it 
can not happen as you point out there are policy dictated exceptions.

the "restricted packages" and voila! all mp3s and whatever else that 
fedora omits, but i got bored, because ubuntu has it all, im lost, i 
normally have to spend time d/l'ing and installing the upstream packages 
that are not butchered, since i dont have to do that anymore, i have more 
time on my hands :)

and since fedora8 wont have an option to do same, you along with the 
regular trolls who think they own this list may just see the back of me 
sooner rather than later :)
So there soon be 8 less fedoras desktops unless fedora8 is so magistical 
but i doubt it ;)

Multimedia programs usually have proprietary or patent encumbered codecs 
are plugins that Fedora default repository doesn't include.
