Not just that, but I had to experiment with which *other* ports other things
could be plugged into -- somehow either they were shared, or else allocated
differently at boot time. Once I got an arrangement that worked, I admit I
stopped caring exactly why. :)
I feel ya, just to have something exotic like a webcam working is reward
enough, no need to fool with it, leave it alone, don't touch it, refuse
kernel updates in yum, count your blessings! Go on to the next problem.
