poweroff command reboots?

Hi Everyone,

I have an issue where the poweroff command reboots my system.

Using /sbin/shutdown -h also reboot the system.

I am unsure whats causing this or how to go about finding the cause, I 
am not sure if its something I have done when I installed fedora or not.

Pressing the power button on the front of my cause also makes the system 
reboot and not shutdown as expected.

Plus if your bios is set to poweron automatically, sometimes poweroff 
does not.

If you want to powerdown the -P (powerdown) option is often useful, the -h 
(halt) gets to choose if it does halt or powerdown, and halt often reboots.

Yes that correct the
machine boots into text only, no GUI.

I only access the machine over ssh from a windows or mac computer.

I presume you mean that you're not booting into runlevel 5, because what 
you're describing is runlevel 3: text only, no GUI.

Sort of.

I do shutdown as I normally would and then wait for the power to resume 
then push and hold the power button on the case to cut the power.

I don't have a mouse or keyboard on the machine itself, and also i'm not 
booting into runlevel 3 so there is no gui, just a console screen.

If I am logged in the console via ssh from another machine and I press 
the power button it does indeed say its going for shutdown.

However it does infact reboot as it comes back on and boots the OS again.

How would I know if its using APM or ACPI ?

I've noticed some mentions of ACPI in the package list.

have you tried watching for when system goes thru restart and
then using power switch to turn system off?

also, when you have grub boot screen up, you can use power
switch to turn system off.

Usually, a momentary press of the power button signals the operating

commanded by the OS, they'll reboot.  GRUB has two (or more?) variations
of the halt command, so you can kill the PC from the grub boot menu, if

and you want to abort the restart).  And I seem to recall putting a
parameter on the kernel line, to make Linux handle shutdowns
differently.

It can also depend on whether the motherboard is using APM or ACPI.

The motherboard firmware. What used to be called the BIOS, although

Try su -c halt
It stops the system but doesn't completely shut the computer off. I also 
use sudo shutdown which stops the machine.

I tried to do /sbin/shutdown -P
but this also reboots the machine.

It's always done this since fedora 17, but I have only ever upgraded 
with fedup so I just figured I was taking the problem with me, ideally 
I'd like to get to the bottom of it and fix it.

I am running the latest version of the kernel, as for the firmware 
update I'm not sure if this has been done or not, or what firmware I 
should be trying to update.

I do yum update very regularly.

If I push and hold the power
button it just cuts the power after a few 
seconds, and doesn't shutdown gracefully.

This is what I end up having to do as I don't use a keyboard, mouse or 
monitor on the machine, so I press the button once wait for it to 
shutdown then when it comes back on I press and hold the power button so 
it cuts the power whilst its still doing the bios stuff.

Has it always done this or is it a new problem?

In the past, on other Linuxes, I've found that a firmware update can
help with this - as does running the latest available kernel. ACPI is
usually responsible & it's a compatibility minefield for non-Windows
OSes.
