metacity keybindings stopped working after FC5->FC6 upgrade

When I press "Left Windows Key + d" on my keyboard, I like that to run
gnome-dictionary. Since Fedora Core 1, I've been doing this using a script
that calls gconftool-2 or by firing up gconf-editor and manually modifying
metacity shortcuts, as described here:

After upgrading to Fedora Core 6, the metacity keybindings suddenly stopped
working. I can see that in gconf-editor, the metacity keybindings are still
properly defined, for instance,
"apps->metacity->global_keybindings->run_command_6" maps to
"<Mod4>d", and
"apps->metacity->keybinding_commands->command_6" maps to
"gnome-dictionary".
And, I'm pretty dang sure I'm still using metacity since it is in the
process table and my graphics card doesn't support AIGLX, so compiz wouldn't
even run if I tried (and I did try).

Anyone know why metacity no longer intercepts the Mod4+d chord?

My next step is probably to blow away all my ~/.gno* settings directories
since I don't do a heck of a lot of desktop customization, and if I do I'm
probably spending time on something I don't need to spend time on.

... but with compiz you have other cool keybindings to change the
Desktops - here an excerpt from the opensuse page

There are many configuration options under
Compiz->General->Screen0->Options.

      * Switch windows = Alt + Tab
      * Arrange and View All Windows = Moving the pointer to the top
        right screen corner turns on or off; clicking a window will zoom
        it to the front
      * Switch desktops on cube = Ctrl + Alt + Left/Right Arrow
      * Switch desktops on cube - with active window following = Ctrl +
        Shift + Alt + Left/Right Arrow
      * Rotate cube manually = Ctrl + Alt + left-click and grab an empty
        desktopspace.
      * Make window translucent/opaque = possible with the "transset"
        utility or Alt + wheel mouse
      * Zoom-in once = Super-key right-click
      * Zoom-in manually = Super-key + wheel mouse up
      * Zoom-out manually = Super-key + wheel mouse down
      * Move window = Alt + left-click
      * Snap Move window (will stick to borders) = Ctrl + Shift +
        left-click
      * Resize window = Alt + right-click
      * Bring up the window below the top window = Alt + middle-click
      * Slow-motion = Shift + F10
      * Water = hold Ctrl+Super key 
              * Rain = Shift-F9

"Super-key" means the Linux respectively W** key.
If you know of others, please add them here.

If <Mod4> doesn't work, have you tried <Super_L> or <Super_R> ?
That's what
fedora 5 calls my Windows key...

Joachim, I think compiz looks amazing and I'd love to use it, but, sadly, my
hardware doesn't support it.

David, thanks for the suggestion. Strange, but when I change the keybinding
to "<Super_L>d", metacity acts as though I changed it to simply
"d", and
every "d" keypress (regardless of whether Super_L/Mod4/Left Windows was held
down) triggers the run command.

Ah yes, xmodmap! I'd completely forgotten about that utility. Perhaps I
hoped I'd never have to learn how to really use it.

Using your hints, I was able to get the Mod4 mappings to work in the current
X session without rebooting or even restarting.

xmodmap -e "clear mod4"
xmodmap -e "add mod4 = Super_L"

And BAM, they're back! I don't use that "Menu" key, but perhaps someday

I migh t be able to help you with 3 out of the 5 keyboard mappings on your
wishlist. Hopefully you're using Metacity. I don't think there is a binding
for iconifying a window and I don't know how to incorporate a mouse click,
but the other three you mention:

<mod4>f  maximize
<mod4>h  horizontal-maximize
<mod4>m  vertical-maximize

can be mapped exactly as you specify using gconf-editor and navigating to
"apps-> metacity->window_keybindings" and creating mappings. You can also
do
it from the command line:

gconftool-2 -t string -s \
  /apps/metacity/window_keybindings/maximize \
  "<Mod4>f"
gconftool-2 -t string -s \
  /apps/metacity/window_keybindings/maximize_horizontally \
  "<Mod4>h"
gconftool-2 -t string -s \
  /apps/metacity/window_keybindings/maximize_vertically \
  "<Mod4>m"

Looks like metacity will continue to manage my windows, at least until
compiz works with my hardware. :)

Xorg a while back broke the default <mod4> mapping I was using.  I've
just been adding it back "by hand" via a global xmodmap setting.  Just
add the following two lines to this file:

/etc/X11/Xmodmap:

clear mod4
add   mod4 = Super_L Menu

I prefer "Menu" for the right-hand mod4 key, you may want to use
Super_R instead.

After I added this Xmodmap and rebooted, I was able to put all my
window manager commands on <mod4> maps.  I like <mod4> for this since
<alt> bindings tend to interfere with keys the programs themselves are
using.

The mappings I'm very  frustrated if I can't have are:

<mod4>i  iconify
<mod4>f  maximize
<mod4>h  horizontal-maximize
<mod4>m  vertical-maximize  

I just wish I could figure out how to get metacity (or some helper) to
also do an iconify via <mod4>button-2.  I guess I'm still a twm guy at
heart.
