So Google has this nifty tool that helps webmasters keep a track of their
website pages @ google.com/webmasters/. It shows crawling frequencies, 404
errors, unreachable pages, administrates sitemaps, URLs restricted by
robots.txt, etc.
We'd need to create a google account and add a small file in each of our domains
for verification. Moinmoin already supports it [1] and so does Plone. For static
pages, we'd need to either create a script that produces it or write it by
ourselves.
Is this something that might interest us?

For some reason I thought that F Infra had already done some work with
this? You may want to ask around those folks.

Yep, we've got it setup for use with the sitemap. If there's any info you'd
like from it or anything you want me to change. Let me know.
Besides sitemaps, these tools can help us in a variety of ways. It would be
useful for us to set it up for most of our domains (do we have a list of all our
websites?), and someone from our team to regularly check it for errors, 404s
etc. It even sounds like a good task for a new member.

So, if there are no security issues, a new member of the team who would like to
learn the ropes of our website management and get his hands dirty with something
that could prove useful could get this going. :)
We can start by creating a list on the wiki of the websites/domain we have and
how/where they get deployed, which is something I believe we should have anyway.
Then someone with access to Fedora's google account (is there one?) should add
the domains and give the list of the filenames that should be put in each domain
for verification.
If no one volunteers, I'll do it once I find some free time.

I'm somewhat familiar with Google's webmaster tools, so I'd be
willing to give this a go.
Step one is to create a wiki page to document this. Is there a
particular place this page would fit (inside Websites or
Infrastructure)? Otherwise, I'll take a look around and create a
page somewhere in hopes that it can be easily moved if needed.
As of now, I see that the page needs to contain a list of websites/
domains managed by the Fedora project, along with information about
them and the filenames of their corresponding google verification
files. Since I certainly don't know about every site/domain Fedora
has, I'll set up the structure of the page and send an email for
people to fill in relevant info.

I've made the list a table to be more compact, we can add details below the
table for each site if we have to, or point to the respective pages for more
info, maintainers etc.
It would be useful to fill this table for housekeeping purposes, even for
websites we won't be needing the google tools for.

If we are using this, why not Google analytics or a GPL'ed script that
was offered here before?
For stats we've got awstats already. If anyone knows of a FOSS tool that offers
what the rest of the google webmaster tools are offering, then that would be
even better.

we used it because its the only way to submit a site map to google.
