#314: fedoraproject.org thinks that I'm living in Swiss, why? --------------------------+------------------------------- Reporter: sommerfeldt | Owner: webmaster Type: defect | Status: new Priority: major | Milestone: Component: General | Keywords: localisation i18n Blocked By: | Blocking: --------------------------+------------------------------- 1. fedoraproject.org chooses the locale de_CH for me automatically although I don't live in Swiss but at the northern border of Germany instead, just a few km away from Denmark, and so de_DE would be the correct choice.
2. Even if de_CH would be the right choice (which isn't, see above), why does de_CH mean that the English version of the web pages are shown and not the German ones?

Hi,
Geolocation and language detection is never 100% accurate. It probably did not detect the correct language from your IP or your browser.
No one has translated getfedora.org into de_CH, thus the English version is shown.

I understand that it's never 100% accurate. But I had the same problem when I lived in a different town of Germany (about 300km away from here), and when visiting friends living in other cities (for example at the center of Germany). And it doesn't matter if I use Firefox or Chrome or Chromium or Midori. Furthermore I do not have this problem with any other web site, e.g. the geolocation here at fedorahosted.org is correct, it gives me the German version of the pages automatically, with Firefox, Chrome and Midori (w/o logging in).
All these facts lets me assume that this is not a problem with geolocation accuracy, but a real bug instead. (In fact currently I don't believe anybody does see the German version automatically, without changing language manually.)

These issues most of the times happen due to different settings in your browser or system. Certainly we can check this but from a fast overview it should be all correct.
Btw, fedorahosted does NOT have the de_CH localization, so it will be always de only, for suisse and german folks. Also, are we talking about getfedora.org, right? Or which website are you looking at? Spins perhaps? (fedoraproject.org is not longer active)

I just booted a (different) laptop with Windows 7 and tried Internet Explorer and Firefox on that system, same result.
Regarding the URL: Shame on me, I didn't notice the URL redirection to getfedora.org. So yes, we are talking about getfedora.org.

In the meantime I have asked several people (about 20) living in different towns of Germany to visit getfedora.org. No-one of them has seen this site in German, and all of them got the "de_CH" version when clicking on "Workstation".
So the localisation algorithm on getfedora.org simply do not know Germany at all.

Thanks for this update. Does this happen only with getfedora.org or also with other websites? How does spins.fedoraproject.org look? It should have the same behavior, but perhaps not. And what about start.fpo?

As far as I can tell this seems to be a problem with getfedora.org only. But the behaviour was the same on the old (pre-F21) www.fedoraproject.org page where the problem was more obvious since "Schwyzerdütsch" (=de_CH) was shown as selected language in the upper right corner of the page.
http://spins.fedoraproject.org/ shows in German for me, so no problem here. On http://start.fedoraproject.org/ there are at least two German words ("Fedora-Dokumentation" and "Sponsoren") so I assume this is the German version, too.
BTW: When visiting www.redhat.com I see the English version of the website ("en"), if I want to see the German one ("de") I have to switch the language manually. But I don't know if this behavior is intended or not here.
