typo in /etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit ?
by Marcus Schuetz
In line 394 + 395:
unamer=`uname -r`
eval version=`echo unamer | awk -F '.' '{ print "(" $1 " " $2 ")" }'`
shouldn't it be $unamer ?

gaim problems
by Luciano Miguel Ferreira Rocha
Hi,
There's at least one problem with current gaim on fedora-devel: the
gaim-remote binary has a dependency on libgaim-remote.so.0, but the package
has only a symbolic link from libgaim-remote.so.
There was also a problem with the gaim-0.75-1 version at freshrpms,
regarding lost connections to irc servers, but I haven't tried the devel
version yet for that bug.

rawhide install troubles
by Gary Peck
My hard drive died last week so I ended up reinstalling Fedora Core 1
and Rawhide from scratch this past weekend. First, I installed Fedora
Core 1 from the CD's. Then I installed apt and used it to upgrade to
Rawhide using "apt-get dist-upgrade" (I know this isn't an officially
supported method). Here's some issues I noticed after the Rawhide
upgrade:
- the SELinux policy package doesn't get pulled in by anything when
doing an upgrade. maybe something can depend on it? or maybe this
should just go in the "unsupported" category.
- lvm2 doesn't create the /etc/lvm directory.
- i spent a few hours trying to get the new kernel-2.6/lvm2 combination
to boot from my lvm1 partitions. i have /boot as a normal ext3
partition and everything else (including /) on lvm. i figured out that
this upgrade actually needs to be done in multiple parts. if you try
to install kernel 2.6 and lvm2 and reboot after that, the device nodes
for your lvm partition won't get upgraded and the boot will fail.
there should be a note somewhere to explain this to people. this is
what i had to do:
1) install new lvm2 and initscripts
2) mkdir /etc/lvm
3) reboot (still using the 2.4.22 kernel)
4) install kernel 2.6
5) reboot with the new kernel
- i had OSS sound card modules in my modules.conf file from the FC1
install. kudzu didn't add the appropriate ALSA module entries to
/etc/modprobe.conf unless i first removed /etc/sysconfig/hwconf.
- /sys doesn't get added to /etc/fstab and doesn't get mounted on
bootup.
- the USB loading section on lines 204-209 in rc.sysinit
(initscripts-7.43-2) fails on 2.6 kernels. specifically, the fgrep on
/proc/bus/usb/drivers fails because that file doesn't exist. modprobe
keybdev and modprobe mousedev also both fail because those modules
don't exist in 2.6 (kernel-2.6.1-1.61). (I just filed this as bug
#114533).
- cpuspeed fails trying to access a non-existant file under
/sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0. it should probably check first if it's
running under a supported CPU.
- as other people have mentioned, the gnome menus are gone. i'm hoping
this will work once all of gnome has been recompiled and pushed into
rawhide.
- i get the following dialog box error message on gnome login:
Failed to load image redhat-email.png
Details: Failed to open file
'/usr/share/icons/hicolor/48x48/apps/redhat-email.png': No such file
or directory
that file is a broken symlink to an evolution 1.4 icon. i'm guessing
it should be updated to point to the evolution 1.5 directory. (i just
filed this as bug #114534).
- the gnome settings daemon fails to start with the following dialog box
error:
There was an error starting the GNOME Settings Daemon.
Some things, such as themes, sounds, or background settings may not
work correctly.
The Settings Daemon restarted too many times.
The last error message was:
Failed to execute
/usr/src/build/343500-i386/install/usr/libexec/gnome-settings-daemon:
2 (No such file or directory)
GNOME will still try to restart the Settings Daemon next time you
log in.
if i then try to run /usr/libexec/gnome-settings-daemon manually, i
get the following error on the console:
** (gnome-settings-daemon:3522): WARNING **: Could not activate the
XKB configuration
and the following error in a dialog box:
Error activating XKB configuration.
Probably internal X server problem.
X server version data:
The XFree86 Project, Inc
40300000
You are using XFree 4.3.0.
There are known problems with complex XKB configurations.
Try using simpler configuration or taking more fresh version of
XFree software.
after these two errors though, it seems to start up fine. this is with
control-center-2.5.2-1
gary
p.s. let me know if i should file more of these in bugzilla. for some of
them, i wasn't sure which package to file under.

php - conflicts because of php-imap
by Jim Cornette
Just because of a statement that there was no conflict with today's
payload of rawhide improvements. I have a conflict using up2date to
install the latest php-ldap and php itself because of php-imap dependacies.
Error message as follows.
There was a package dependency problem. The message was:
Unresolvable chain of dependencies:
php-imap-4.3.4-3 requires php = 4.3.4-3
Please modify your package selections and try again.
I have chosen not to break dependacies for now and pass on the php stuff.
I know that rawhide is not perfect. But I'm trying to contribute from my
end. ecept for the missing gnome menus, it looks pretty good.

src.rpm standards
by Gene C.
Ok, this did not get a rise from anyone on fedora.us so lets try here ...
One thing that has always annoyed me about some packages are the "extra"
source files they plug into the SOURCE directory. While most and all "good"
rpms have the package version id on all tarballs, patches, and other
"official" files. Then there are the "extra" files. These are named
absolutely anything. If your are in the process of building two separate
packages but they have a name conflict, you will never know except that the
result may not perform/operate as expected and your will never know why.
I am not sure what the standard should be but I believe that there should be
one.
While I am comfortable with a package xxx version=2.3.4 having a patch file
named xxx-1.2.3-fixit.patch because it was developed on version 1.2.3 but
still applies to version 2.3.4, that is OK with me.
But, when some package xxx has a file named perhaps "version", that is
something that should not be happening.
I assume that the various automated build systems start with a clean set of
directories for each build, this may not be true for individuals (it is
certainly not true for me).
OK, what do you call think about this?

Guys I have been trying for a few days to get this project right but
there are no responses from the wine-list and it looks like no one can
assist me on the fedora-list either.
This is what Iam doing and how far I am.
Senario is I have a windows app that connects to a sql2000-ent server.
It depends on the server drive being mapped [I got that right] Then it
needs the client connectivity for sql7 or higher to be installed.
Currently the error I get is
"DBMS MSS Microsoft SQL Server 6.x is not supported in your current
installation"
any ideas Please
Thanks
