Hey, folks. I just wanted to check in and see if someone's on top of documenting the upgrade process for Beta, as it's still somewhat manual. I don't believe it's going to be as simple as 'yum install fedup; fedup' - it'll at least involve feeding an explicit URL to fedup.
We have a test case that documents the current procedure:
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/QA:Testcase_upgrade_fedup_cli_previous_deskto...
I believe the target URL will change for the public release, but the procedure I think will stay more or less the same.
Does someone want to co-ordinate with wwoods and tflink (who know the most about fedup, I think) to make sure this is documented in the Beta relnotes or whatever? Thanks!

I'm not sure if this has been completed or not. I'll see if I can pull the latest Install Guide source down and take a look.

Sorry for my delay in notifying the list. Yes, I've just exchanged emails with Will about this to see how the Install Guide is affected.
Given that it will no longer be possible to upgrade using the installer itself, I will be removing the section that covers that. I'll explain the new fedup procedure in place of preupgrade in the short 'Upgrading Your Current System' chapter later in the guide.
I will keep in touch with Will and tflink to ensure fedup is documented accurately.
Cheers,
Jack

Along with this I think that we need to put something in the release notes, possibly in the installer section.
Some along the lines of what is already on this[1] page should be sufficient.
"Beginning with Fedora 18 Beta, a new upgrade tool fedup has been introduced, replacing older PreUpgrade. FedUp currently only supports Fedora 17 -> Fedora 18 upgrades. If you want to upgrade Fedora 16, you need to go through Fedora 17 as an intermediary step. More information about the process [see the Install Guide]."

+1. The fedup section of the Installation Guide is already underway, so this looks like the ideal way to handle it.
I'll drop in some copy along these lines, along with an admonishment shment that fedup replaces both preupgrade *and* upgrading via the installation image, when I get home this evening. Unless someone gets to it first.

I should have git pulled before I typed this. There is already something in the release notes about this (in Installation.xml). But as others have pointed out the process is still evolving so we need to make sure that the documentation is accurate come release time.
Sorry for any confusion, Zach
