I can put my laptop to sleep via:

But I can't get it to wake up again. I have tried
pressing keys on the keybaord, the power button, and
the mouse.
I see the following in /var/log/messages

USB3
Feb 1 08:18:06 localhost kernel: ACPI: (supports S0

/proc/acpi/sleep hasn't been in current kernels for months,
which would seem to indicate you're running on an out of date
distribution.
Updating and trying to use the proper methods (pm-suspend / pm-hibernate)
will probably be a good starting point.
