Bob,
Your message hints that you don't specifically want the external drive to be mounted all the time and be accessible to all users at all times, only that it may be needed for occasional use. I have a drive attached to my router that I mount manually for occasional backups or file access. I have not manually created a samba server.
I am not using the same equipment as you. My router is a Netgear with a 2TB Seagate disk attached to its USB port. I can connect to it with my F32 computer using Mate desktop and from a laptop (wifi) running Linux Mint, also Mate desktop. The Seagate drive has the factory format - NTFS. Samba has not been manually installed on any computer. Just to verify, I have a recently installed F32/Gnome desktop in QEMU/KVM that has no software additions from the live iso. This is the mount location: /run/user/1000/gvfs/smb-share:server=r6900p.local,share=usb_storage/... r6900p is my Netgear's name.
Using the Mate or the Gnome file manager, I was able to select the address of my router and connect. A window opens offering to connect anomalously or enter name & password. I did not enter name/pwd, just clicked connect. Once connected, I added the address to my file browser bookmarks so connecting is easier. The exact steps vary with file manager.
When I first got the 2TB Seagate drive several years ago, I had to modify its name to make it more linux friendly
- Fred, my objective is to use the drive as an NAS. The drive began life as a WD Mybook, it had two 2GB partitions for whatever reason and I had been using it to save NFS files etc. It would appear on my desktop file manager and I would mount it there when I needed to save stuff to it. Recently I removed the original partitions and made it one 4TB partition and have been using it in the same way. Now I would like to connect it to the router USB port and make it available on the LAN for wired or wifi use. My stuff is mainly connected through an ethernet switch but I have iPhone, iPad, whatever users that are wireless.
My immediate problem is that I did not see the external drive when i set up the ASUS router yesterday. I guess I need to go back and look at that again on order to define the problem better, but I expected to see the external drive listed and did not at the time I believe it was asking fir a share name which I could not provide. So it is a continuing effort that I am muddling through ...
As I said I have to move to the other computer which for the present is dedicated to configuring the new router, a task that never seems simple when you don't have a Windows system to work from. With the aid of network manager I could see that the default address was 192.168.50.1 I did not expect that. Now I need to figure hoe to mount the USB drive as Ed suggested, hopefully to /media/USB that I made for the purpose.
