hi,
I've plugged in my harddisk via a SATA/IDE to USB converter to my laptop. The device is created as /dev/sdb, but fdisk -l or parted, gparted do not show it as a drive.
Here's the dmesg output:
scsi8 : usb-storage 1-2:1.0 scsi 8:0:0:0: Direct-Access USB TO I DE/SATA Device 0041 PQ: 0 ANSI: 0 sd 8:0:0:0: Attached scsi generic sg3 type 0 sd 8:0:0:0: [sdc] Attached SCSI disk
How do I access my drive? I intend to format it etc. and then set up fedora 13 on it.

Looks like it is sdc, not sdb. What does "fdisk -l /dev/sdc" show?

Very very funny. LOL!!!
You say the device is created as /dev/sdb, but you dmesg states clearly it is /dev/sdc
Now all you do is
sudo fdisk -l /dev/sdc
or
sudo parted -l /dev/sdc

$ cat /proc/partitions
If its not in there its not working. That is always the first place to look if in doubt.
Good luck!

I got no windoz ;)
I'll connect it to a windows machine someplace and check. I have a feeling the SATA to USB thing *may* be the culprit too.

Is there a PC with extra SATA port you can connect it to?
Today, a pcmcia card with 2 SATA ports is very inexpensive.
$8.24 http://cgi.ebay.com/PCMCIA-Serial-ATA-SATA-ESATA-Cradbus-Adapter-/3902274970...
$8.25 http://cgi.ebay.com/Inside-PCMCIA-eSATA-Serial-ATA-SATA-Card-Laptop-/1206062...
If your slot is a pci-express slot, then
Dual esata ports pci-express card: $16.15 http://cgi.ebay.com/eSATA-e-SATA-2-Ports-PCMCIA-ExpressCard-Express-Card-/17...
Even if the drive proves to be dead, it could very well be still under warranty. Who is the manufacturer?

Being an electrician, I would suspect the exceedingly cheap (yet quite efficient and about zero phantom load, unlike the heavy wall wart types) switching power bricks that come with such adapters.
So, try a different power supply. e.g. you can connect the drive to a computer's power supply and still use the USB to SATA adapter to see if the black brick's the problem.
