Yesterday I did a normal yum upgrade and it pulled in a few packages (listed below).
Since then I've had problems such as Kate refusing to run, with
kate: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/kde4/katepart.so: undefined symbol: _ZN9QGroupBoxC1EP7QWidget
Konsole taking several attempts to start up without segfaulting
Acrobat Reader immediately crashes the X server on startup
and more. Does anyone else see this? Know when another yum upgrade will fix it?
The packages that got updated were
Apr 22 09:12:52 Updated: krb5-libs-1.7.1-7.fc12.i686 Apr 22 09:12:53 Updated: lm_sensors-libs-3.1.2-2.fc12.i686 Apr 22 09:12:57 Updated: 1:xscreensaver-base-5.11-1.fc12.i686 Apr 22 09:12:58 Updated: 1:xscreensaver-gl-base-5.11-1.fc12.i686 Apr 22 09:12:59 Updated: 1:enchant-1.6.0-1.fc12.i686 Apr 22 09:13:03 Updated: 1:xscreensaver-gl-extras-5.11-1.fc12.i686 Apr 22 09:13:09 Updated: 1:xscreensaver-extras-5.11-1.fc12.i686 Apr 22 09:13:11 Updated: lm_sensors-3.1.2-2.fc12.i686 Apr 22 09:13:13 Updated: krb5-devel-1.7.1-7.fc12.i686 Apr 22 09:13:15 Updated: krb5-workstation-1.7.1-7.fc12.i686 Apr 22 09:13:17 Updated: kid3-1.4-1.fc12.i686 Apr 22 09:13:17 Updated: xorg-x11-server-common-1.7.6-3.fc12.i686 Apr 22 09:13:22 Updated: tzdata-java-2010f-3.fc12.noarch Apr 22 09:13:31 Updated: tzdata-2010f-3.fc12.noarch Apr 22 09:13:33 Updated: xorg-x11-server-Xorg-1.7.6-3.fc12.i686 Apr 23 09:05:19 Updated: oprofile-0.9.6-5.fc12.i686 Apr 23 09:05:20 Updated: 12:dhclient-4.1.1-13.fc12.i686 Apr 23 09:05:21 Updated: oprofile-gui-0.9.6-5.fc12.i686

The list appears to be unrelated to your problem with "kate". Unless you've had some sort of file system corruption.
Since then I've had problems such as Kate refusing to run, with
kate: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/kde4/katepart.so: undefined symbol: _ZN9QGroupBoxC1EP7QWidget
That belongs to /usr/lib/libQtGui.so.4 Can you verify your Qt package? rpm -V qt And show what version is installed? rpm -q qt

Did you run that as "root"?
The flags are explained in "man rpm" section "VERIFY OPTIONS". The '?' indicates that the file could not be read for verifying its checksum.
The "qt" package consists of multiple binary packages. The libQtGui library is in the "qt-x11" package.
rpm -q qt qt-4.6.2-8.fc12.i686
You could try to yum reinstall the packages to fix them in case a package's checksum has changed.
Or you could yum update qt* to the newer test update for Qt as that would replace your possibly corrupted packages: http://admin.fedoraproject.org/updates/qt-4.6.2-14.fc12

Yes, of course.
You could try to yum reinstall the packages to fix them in case a package's checksum has changed.
Have already done so, specifically I did:
yum reinstall qt
followed by
yum reinstall kdelibs
Now "rpm -V qt" is silent,
but kate still crashes every time with
kate: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/kde4/katepart.so: undefined symbol: _ZN9QGroupBoxC1EP7QWidget

No thank you, I don't want to run testing given that even stable isn't working properly!
Regards, Chris R.

As I mentioned, you would need to reinstall "qt-x11" not just "qt".

Yes! And I run Gnome. Do you use a KVM switch??
In fact, I'm seeing it for at least the third time. With a difference.
In my case, this time as before, it has something to do with my USB KVM switch. There have been several bugs reported to Redhat Bugzilla.
I haven't reported yet, because I'm still testing what worked last time and the time before: shut all machines down; pull one out from behind the switch, connect it to the peripherals directly, and put it through its paces, at length; repeat with each machine (I'm on the second of three); then put them all back behind the switch. Tedious and tiresome, but it has worked here twice, and seems to be working again.
If you *don't* have a KVM switch, I'm afraid I have no clue.
