Hi all;
I've updated to the latest kernel and it boots to a blank screen, nvidia does not start.
Here's what I have installed:
[/root] root@Issac # rpm -qa | grep kernel | sort abrt-addon-kerneloops-1.0.8-2.fc12.x86_64 kernel-2.6.31.12-174.2.19.fc12.x86_64 kernel-2.6.31.12-174.2.22.fc12.x86_64 kernel-2.6.32.9-70.fc12.x86_64 kernel-devel-2.6.31.12-174.2.19.fc12.x86_64 kernel-devel-2.6.31.12-174.2.22.fc12.x86_64 kernel-devel-2.6.32.9-70.fc12.x86_64 kernel-firmware-2.6.32.9-70.fc12.noarch kernel-headers-2.6.32.9-70.fc12.x86_64

f I boot into the 2.6.31.12 kernel all is fine.
Any help, advice, thoughts?
Thanks in advance
You must blacklist nouveau in the edit /etc/grub.conf and add the following to the end of the line(s) starting with 'kernel':
rdblacklist=nouveau
Before using the driver, you need to lower your system protection so SElinux doesn't prevent the driver to load.
setsebool -P allow_execstack on
http://rpmfusion.org/Howto/nVidia#head-205aab6f190d363e3915c0fa2e0681fc392aa...
Make sure the kernel extensions are intalled with the Nvidia Driver
That's it

As a general rule, I would reccomend removing 'rhgb' and 'quiet' from your kernel parameters in grub.conf. This will show more info during boot, and possibly aid in diagnostics.
I'm following this thread with interest after giving up on my own battle with the same issue. After adjusting grub.conf as above, I did note that I could boot further if I added 'vga=34A' ('34a' being what was right for me) to the kernel parameters, but I'm not sure what this signifies.
I'm able to run this kernel without kmod-nv idia, so I've decided to use nouveau drivers until the next update.
Sorry I can't offer more help...

Thanks for the info. I'll be sure to post a SOLVED message to the list if I get it working...
Sorry I can't offer more help...

Install the driver from add remove software not yum It will find the extention for kernel mod and install kernel Do not reboot edit the grub.conf like below and make sure nouveau is blacklisted on all kernel lines after quiet lower protection from selinux
setsebool -P allow_execstack on
reboot
without the driver there is no cuda with nvidia gpu
you may have to uninstall kernel if you have made the attempt already then just re install the driver, it will install new kernel and kernel mods

Either boot a live cd or hold a key down while you boot to get to the previous kernel to get your machine back.
When I did it I had NO choice but to wipe out the system, reinstall Fedora 12 do not update but install the driver for Nvidia through the Add remove software. It will install kernel and kernel mod through the driver install.
Then update your system after you get the new kernel working with the Nvidia driver
Add remove software and search Nvidia install driver and it will find kernel.
This is the only way I could get the system working
Or through yum using akmod nvidia not kmod
Do it through add remove software it is easier

I could. I did try booting previous kernels from the list at boot, but it provides the same black screen. I did try many other things listed here to no avail. I do not wish to reload as I will loose some programs and libs I compiled for a project. I am not sure booting to RL3 will help as I have tried many solutions from command line also. I usually use another Linux flavor, but used FC12 as I was working on a project with another person, kinda bummed this happened. I guess I may have to start from scratch if I do not find a sloution soon.

Is there no way to get those custom libs off ?
I know I had to completely wipe my machine and I had 4 tbit to loose Tell me I was not choked?

Just remember Install fc12 Add remove software select your Nvidia driver The new kernel will install with the Nvidia

Do not wipe and reinstall!
If you can boot to runlevel 3, you can get out. Here's what I did:
Boot to working older kernel, runlevel 1 or 3 if needed.
'rpm -q kernel' will list the installed kernel packages, note the newest kernel.
'yum remove kernel-2.6.whatever.from.above' will remove that kernel and associated kmod and x drivers.
'yum update' will reinstall the newer kernel for you, but without the video drivers.
From there, you can boot to the newest kernel, figure a workaround (nouveau for me) or try the kmod-nvidia process again if you think you missed something.
Thanks again to those that helped me with this, if any happen to be reading.

When this kernel came out there was many people with the same problem and it was the kmod
akmod would be a better choice
What if you can't boot to older kernel as I could not. the Add remove worked on the first try. Allow the Nvidia to install the kernel and kmod

It was exactly the same thing
Black screen and no way to recover.
Just remember Install fc12 Add remove software select your Nvidia driver The new kernel will install with the Nvidia
Blacklist Nouveau in grub.config Lower selinux defense so the driver will load Reboot and enjoy

I did not install any special drivers for my video card as other had done, this is a plain install, no frills, so I am at a loss as to what happened. I could see trouble if I had a video driver loaded that had to be recompiled with each new kernel. This was thrown together to make a couple programs and libs and since I am at a loss to know where all the pgms and libs got stuffed it seems easier to just reload, maybe another flavor of linux would be better suited for what I need.
