I have a Dell Dimension 8400.
On boot-up with the SMP kernel, I see
FATAL: Error inserting acpi_cpufreq (/lib/module/2.6.13-1.1532FC4smp/kernel/arch/i386/kernel/cpu/cpufreq/acpi_cpufreq.ko): No such device
The file itself seems to be there:
-rwxr--r-- 1 root root 14416 Oct 20 01:25 /lib/modules/2.6.13-1.1532_FC4smp/kernel/arch/i386/kernel/cpu/cpufreq/acpi-cpufreq.ko
I can get rid of the error by appending "acpi=off" to the boot instructions, but then I lose hyperthreading support. (Only one CPU reported.)
I'm using the "official" kernel with no local modifications.
Is there a fix or workaround?

of course, read the error message carefully (I had the same problem and it took me a nuber of seconds before I realised that it CAN find the file but that the module itself complains about something it could not find. I had to add the appropriate driver to /etc/cpuspeed
