Hey all, has anyone tried to install Firefox 2.0? I installed Fedora 6 with no problems, but am trying to install firefox 2.0. I tried a yum install firefox-2*, and there was no match. I also downloaded the firefox tar ball, but don't see any install or makefiles. If anyone has any suggestions on how to get this thing installed, they would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Guy

I made FC6 i386 rpms of Firefox 2.0. They are based on caillon's Firefox 2.0 FC7 source rpm.
Hey,
I am running 2.6.15-1.2054_FC5 and updgraded to firefox 2, my method follows...
Downloaded the tarball firefox-2.0.tar.gz, firefox 1.5 lives in /usr/lib/firefox-1.5.0.1/ so I created firefox-2 dir and dumped the tarball in there. Then modified the symbolic link /usr/bin/firefox to point to my new install dir e.g. [george@titan lib]$ which firefox /usr/bin/firefox [george@titan lib]$ l /usr/bin/firefox lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 26 Oct 26 09:52 /usr/bin/firefox -> /usr/lib/firefox-2/firefox
to create the link .... ln -s /usr/lib/firefox-2/firefox /usr/bin/firefox
hope this helps, i'd like to know how everyone else has installed their favourite browser

Isn't this going to be in updates soon?
Thanks, M

Probably only for FC7+. According to Chris Aillon, it'll get an update to FC6 if it hits 3.0 during the cycle though, since that is what will bring the awesome things like XULrunner and whatnot; whereas 2.0 is mostly a marketing version, and incorporating only a few things built-in that are available as extensions to 1.5.0.x (such as form entry spell checking, etc.)

The best anti-phishing feature is a semi-intelligent user. Unfortunately, those seem to be few and far bewteen... T_T

Rémi Collet has made a backport of Firefox 2 to FC4, FC5 and FC6: http://remi.collet.free.fr/index.php?2006/10/25/225-firefox-20-1 (His repository is only for i386, so if you're on another architecture, you'll have to rebuild from the SRPMs: http://remi.collet.free.fr/rpms/SRPMS/ .)
These packages replace the Firefox 1.5 (or 1.0 for FC4) packages. Thus, on FC6, you'll also need the rebuilt reverse dependencies (packages depending on Firefox) if you use any of them or rebuild them yourself from the Fedora SRPMs, because packages using Firefox as their Gecko runtime engine only work with the version of Firefox they were built against. (On FC4 and FC5, these packages are built against Mozilla 1.7, so updating Firefox doesn't require rebuilds there.)

Hi Kevin,
I used Remi's packages with only one caveat: I had to enter about:config and change the locale to pt-BR to have the portuguese UI I had with the standard Firefox packages. It looks like Remi hardcoded his packages to en-US. But all language packs seem to be there.

I have it running under FC5 just fine. I just unarchived it and put into my own personal bin (/home/whatever/bin/firefox) and pointed the link that I had on the panel to point to that version instead. As I am the only one using the machine this works fine for me. I backed up the .mozilla directory prior to doing this so that I could restore things to where they were in case of any problems. Haven't seen any yet...
I'll probably do the same on my FC6 box later today.
ciao, furlan
