today i did an update to the kernel listed above. after the update i rebooted only to discover no sound. i re-ran the soundcard detection but to no avail. the card is an onboard via 8237 that was working just fine before the update.
i've googled it a bit but have found no mention of this issue.
anyone have any idea what's going on and how to resolve the problem?
thank you so much.

Could it have messed up the alsa settings? Run alsamixer from a user terminal - you get more feedback than from the GUIs - then alsactl store, if you get a result.

i double checked this, booted into the previous kernel, and sound is working. so this issue IS the most updated kernel.

I would double-check the modules that you have loaded in each kernel, make sure they are identical.

This may be irellevant but after updating to the latest kernel I found that the modules.conf file had definitions of the sound modules to load followed by a line to remove the sound modules. Once I removed the remove line sound came back.

well i rebooted into the new kernel and logged into console mode. at console mode sound works fine. but if i log into either KDE (my default) or GNOME sound does not work. so this must be a conflict between the newer kernel and the KDE or GNOME sound systems. any ideas?
thank you all.

I can only tell you that I have the same VIA 8237 and the same kernel, 1831_FC4, and after playing around a bit with alsamixer I got it working.
