ATI All In Wonder --- Has anyone gotten TV capture to work?
by FearOfCarpet
I was wondering if anyone has gotten an ATI All in Wonder RADEON's TV
capabilities working in Fedora? There is a lot of information on the net
about this, but I haven't seen much for the RedHat distros. Apparently I
had it working in Debian, but KDE broke before I could really use it and
I ended up wiping Debian and installing Fefora on that machine. I'm
really only after being able to watch live TV off the S-Video input...
Any info would be appreciated- TIA

GL Kills my box?
by Adam Cooper
I have been trying to get an opengl game (vegastrike) to run on my
system. However whilst i've been trying to get this to work i seem to
have lost all opengl capabilities. When running any opengl app the
computer immediately freezes with no output to screen. Being a relative
newb i have no idea how to exit said freeze (ctrl alt F* doesn't get me
anywhere) and so i have to restart. GLXGears as well as tux racer freeze
as well. How can I fix this problem? Are there any logs that may be of
use?
I'm running Kernel 2.6 on a P4 2.6 512MB
Thanks for any help.

Gno fonts in GNOME (not pango problem)
by Mark J. Reed
For some reason I have no fonts in GNOME. It's not the pango problem;
my pango.modules is fully populated and world readable, as are all the
directories it references. But when I do a cleanup and start gnome from
scratch, all text disappears as soon as it gets to the globe+arrow logo.
I assume from this that it's a locale problem, but I have no idea where
to go from there. I also get empty .gnome2/share/?(cursor-)fonts/fonts.dir
files - or actually, containing just the single character '0'. Dunno
if that's related or if it just means I don't have my own custom fonts.
Any help?

Nautilus and .dat file type
by Norman Gaywood
This is probably an upstream problem/feature, but anyway here goes.
Nautilus thinks that files that have an extension of .dat are mpeg
videos. That has got to be wrong.
Surely, nautilus should do more that use a file extension to determine
file type?
Is there a way I can change this behaviour for all users of the system?
I came across this problem during a class on the R statistical package.
They were all using gnome login sessions and no one could edit their
data files from nautilus because it thought they were MPEG videos!

3Com 3c2000 NIC support
by David Niemi
(Sorry if this is a duplicate post, the original seemed to have gone missing on me)
On my Asus K8V motherboard is a 3-Com 3c2000 NIC. I have downloaded and compiled the Driver (as far as I can tell, new to this distro) but I am having problems getting it to load with the kernel and trying to configure it. The log file messages had some text relating to the startup of the driver but I cannot access the internet etc.
I followed the instructions to extract the tar, "make load" then "ifconfig eth0 up", but when I go to the network configuration utilities in FC1 I can't find the card or driver. Nor can I figure out how to load it on boot. The instructions talk about using "/etc/modules.conf file" or insmod . Also as I cannot select the NIC I cannot tell if it is set to use DHCP.
>From the readme file
------------SNIP---------------
If your system is not configured for DHCP, you can assign an IP address
with the command:
ifconfig eth0 a.b.c.d
Where a.b.c.d is the IP address that you wish to use. Again, eth0 may
be different depending on your system configuration.
Configuring the Driver
------------------------
The 3C2000 driver supports various options, which can be supplied
as command line arguments to the 'insmod' command or in the
/etc/modules.conf file. You may specify more than one option.
Unless otherwise stated, all settings take the form of:
<Option-Name>=value [,value...]
If you use the modules.conf file to load the driver at boot time,
include the word "options" when configuring the driver.
For example:
options 3c2000 DupCap_A=Full
If you use command line 'insmod', do not include the word "option"
when configuring the driver.
For example:
insmod 3c2000.o DupCap_A=Full
The following options are supported:
OPTION: Speed_A
Selects the speed of Port A of the NIC.
"Auto" - Automatic Resolution
"10" - 10MBPS
"100" - 100MBPS
"1000" - 1GIG
OPTION: DupCap_A
Selects the duplex capabilities of Port A of the NIC.
"Full" - Full Duplex
"Half" - Half Duplex
"Both" - Both Half Duplex & Full Duplex
-------------------------SNIP--------------------------------
I use an old computer with Smoothwall on it which provides the DHCP.
Anyone have some suggestions as to how to I can ge the network running on FC1, or if their is support for this card in FC3? I saw reference in another list to users using a different driver but the proper one would be nice.
Thanks

RHCE
by Chadley Wilson
Dear friends,
My company has decided to send me for Linux training. The boss wants me
to do the relevant training to bring our company up to speed with IBM
and and other major PC brands that are selling Linux on there PCs for
end users.
So I did some research and the outcome was to do the course through
Obsidian systems in South Africa (Where I live).
They are offering the Redhat Certified Engineer(RHCE),Supposed to be one
of the top IT qualifications.
Now the boss wants to know how to tell if this is the the correct
course.
And he wants to know if we shouldn't maybe go down the SUSE route.
My question is a difficult one because I need to justify and prove prior
to actually going on the course that RHCE would be the right way to go.
I have already mentioned that RedHat base platforms are by far more
widely supported than any other distro and that FC will be the best for
us to use on our our hardware because it is very configurable and has
such great hardware support.
But one has to bear in mind that I am trying to explain this to a person
who has no idea of computers and operating systems let alone Linux.
Could some one point me in the direction of some good justifications for
my choice? or point me in a new direction altogether.
Either way, I have just got to give him a very convincing answer.
Thanks

Mounting a Windows XP Shared Folder
by Gregory P. Ennis
I have reviewed Adam Gautier's recent post on mounting a Windows shared
document folder on his Linux box with interest. I have tried to do the
a similar thing for our system but am unable to succeed.
I have xyz set up as a WindowsXP Professional machine, and I am able to
access the
Shared Documents folder on xyz from other Windows machines but have not
been able to mount it with FC1. I have xyz listed in my hosts file, and
have ALL: xyz : allow in my hosts.allow file. I have also turned off
iptables to make sure there was no conflict.
My fstab entry is:
xyz:/ /mnt/ceb smbfs noauto,user,user=guest 0 0
When I use the command:
mount xys:/
I receive :
This command is designed to be run from within /bin/mount by giving
the option '-t smbfs'. For example:
mount -t smbfs -o username=tridge,password=foobar //fjall/test
/data/test
I have tried to use the syntax in the error message but get the same
results.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you,

Start again on the newbie's networking problem. Re: Need help (of course) setting up network
by Shelagh Manton
At 13:00 4/25/2004, you wrote:
I installed Fedora Core 1 and everything seems to be working well,
including being able to use the internet. (Although, I think I stuffed up
my firewall settings yesterday). However I need the help of a kind patient
person who can walk me through our simple 3 computer network setup. I am
the only one on Linux, the other two are on WindowsXP. Mine however is the
only computer with internet access.
You're going to need to provide a lot more detail when you ask a question,
but we'll try to help you.
Now, assuming that your computer (A) connects to the Internet and that the
other two computers (B and C) run WinXP and connect to yours, I suggest
you:
1. First make sure that you have two Ethernet cards in your A computer,
and that A can connect to the Internet *and* to B and C.
2. Once basic networking has been established (don't worry about the rest
of it until then), go to http://www.shorewall.net and download the
Shorewall RPM package. Also download the "Two-Interface Quick Guide" and it
will show you how to give B and C access to the Internet via A.
Post back here if you have more questions. And remember, when starting a
new conversation, press the button in your mail program for a *new*
message... do not reply to an existing message since this confuses the
threads.
Did starting a new thread help? Hope so. But it looks confusing to me.
OK. My machine is dual booted win98/Fedora 1. Networking has worked fine
with windows, but my 14 year old son sorted that out. We are on a hub so I
don't need 2 ethernet cards. My big problem is I don't know how to
configure the networking files and samba. Also LIsa won't start up for me
which I think is another init config file problem (eg me being blonde
again!). Please tell me what kind of other information you need to know. I
like to use the KDE desk top and have somewhere picked up a utility called
smb4k which looks like a gui samba configuration interface and network
neighbourhood thingy in one. (But the documentation is primitive to say the
least). I feel like I probably need to start from scratch.
Shelagh

Huh?
This is from the Hippocratic Oath... who the heck is J. Holt?
This is in the context of education. J Holt tried to reform education in
America in the 60s & 70s. And yes he probably did quote from the
Hippocratic oath. SOM

FC1(kernel 2.4) -> FC2 (kernel2.6) with LVM?
by Erik Karu
Hi,
I have a FC1 box as a server and LVM is in use. Should
I read some documents or fear anything when I'll
upgrade to FC2 or will FC2/2.6 do The Right Thing
automagically during/after the upgrade with LVM disks?
Does it matter if I use yum/up2date/apt ?
Thanks,
Erik.
