3Com 3c2000 NIC support

(Sorry if this is a duplicate post, the original seemed to have gone missing on me)

On my Asus K8V motherboard is a 3-Com 3c2000 NIC.  I have downloaded and compiled the
Driver (as far as I can tell, new to this distro) but I am having problems getting it to
load with the kernel and trying to configure it. The log file messages had some text
relating to the startup of the driver but I cannot access the internet etc.

I followed the instructions to extract the tar, "make load" then "ifconfig
eth0 up", but when I go to the network configuration utilities in FC1 I can't
find the card or driver.  Nor can I figure out how to load it on boot.  The instructions
talk about using "/etc/modules.conf file" or insmod .  Also as I cannot select
the NIC I cannot tell if it is set to use DHCP.

 ifconfig eth0 a.b.c.d

Where a.b.c.d is the IP address that you wish to use.  Again, eth0 may
be different depending on your system configuration.

    The 3C2000 driver supports various options, which can be supplied 
    as command line arguments to the 'insmod' command or in the 
    /etc/modules.conf file. You may specify more than one option.
    Unless otherwise stated, all settings take the form of:
     
     <Option-Name>=value [,value...]

    If you use the modules.conf file to load the driver at boot time, 
    include the word "options" when configuring the driver.

    For example:  
 options 3c2000 DupCap_A=Full
 
    If you use command line 'insmod', do not include the word "option"
    when configuring the driver. 

    For example: 
  insmod 3c2000.o DupCap_A=Full

    Selects the speed of Port A of the NIC.

I use an old computer with Smoothwall on it which provides the DHCP.

Anyone have some suggestions as to how to I can ge the network running on FC1, or if their
is support for this card in FC3?  I saw reference in another list to users using a
different driver but the proper one would be nice.

The first thing I'd try is 'lspci' to verify that the system even knows that
the hardware is there.  You should see SOMETHING corresponding to that iface
(although it may be cryptic, like "unknown device").  If you don't see it
then chances are it's disabled in your BIOS.  If you're not sure, paste your
lspci output into your reply.

Hi,
I have an Asus P4P800 this the same NIC ( 3C940 ).
Prior to kernel 2.4.22-1.2188, I had to download the 3C2000 driver and 
install it.
Now ( with this kernel ) the NIC if fully recognized, and the used 
driver is sk98lin.

Problem is getting connected to get the updates.  Could you give me some
more information on how to get this driver up and running in the base
install with kernel 2.4.22-1.2115?  I seem to be missing something in the
installation process.

So Linux sees the onboard NIC (line 4) just no driver?

What do you have as problem loading the 3c2000.o into your kernel ?
I hope that you correctly have built the driver ?
( edit top Makefile of linux src to match you kernel, set the correct C 
compiler i.e gcc32, make a build of the 3c2000 driver, and then make 
install )
if so you should find 3c2000.o in your /lib/modules/xxx  ( for me : 
/lib/modules/2.4.22-1.2115.nptlsmp/kernel/drivers/net/3c2000.o )
If so try to load the module by hand : /sbin/insmod 3c2000
Then have a look in your /var/log/messages file. You should see your NIC 
here.
After this, you should be able to run the netconfig utility to configure 
your card.
after configuration you should see a line like :
alias eth0 3c2000
in the /etc/modules.conf file.
Let me know if it's working.

I edited the beginning of the makefile to have the compiler CC = gcc32 as
with the base FC1 install.  Everything appears to compile properly but there
is no 3c2000.o in the /lib ..../net/ directory.  (Note:  This was the 3rd
time that I ran the make load command, I removed all of the ".o" files first
before re-compiling)

At the end of the compile the command "insmod $(TARGET)" from the makefile
runs loading the 3c2000.o

When I try running the network configuration utility I do not see the
3c2000, nor is there any alias in the /etc/modules.conf

/var/log/messages has:

: Copyright...

When I check the network configuration utility for a 3c940 it is not their
either.

Forget the make load
do a make then a make install
At this time you should find the 3c2000.o in the 
/lib/modules/your_kernel/...
If you don't find it the build procedure is not correct.

OK, did the make, then the make install and it is in the /lib/../net/
directroy.

The module was not loaded so I did an insmod 3c2000.o and got the message
from the mssage log. still won't appear under the Network configuration
utility, not is there an entry in modules.conf.

ifconfig  shows that the driver is loaded but there is no IP addresses
assigned to it.
ifconfig eth0 up doesn't appear to yeild further results.

I went back through your messages Gaetan and noticed the netconfig and
decided to try it from the command line instead of the graphical Network
configuration utility.  Voila, it works now.  even re-booted to ensure.

Thank you very much for your assistance, now to do updates and see what
happens.

Under heavy load withing some time (some days upto some
week) card stay "crazy" and sent more then 100,000 intr per
sec
So server has heavy loaded CPU in sys mode
