New NVIDIA PCI-E cards
by Rafiq_Maniar@Dell.com
Has anyone had any experience of using any of the new PCI-E graphics cards from NVidia with Fedora or RHEL?
Specifically, the Quadro FX1300. I've got the proprietary drivers all installed perfectly and am getting an extremely FPS rate for this card - 5000 according to glxgears. An older lower end AGP Quadro 900 card with the same drivers gives significantly more performance - 8000 FPS.
Anyone using this card or a similar PCI-E one? Is this a limitation of the nvidia drivers, or PCI-E support in the 2.4 kernel? Or something else?
Thanks,
Rafiq

galeon only works as root (galeon-1.3.17-3.1.fc2.dag.i386.rpm)
by Ross Macintyre
I've installed galeon-1.3.17-3.1.fc2.dag.i386.rpm and it installed ok but
when I run it as a user, I get these error messages and it quits, saying
it has quit unexpectedly. Anyone any ideas?
When I run it as root, I get similar errors but it keeps working.

cdrecord weirdness with Sony CD-RW CRX230ED
by Didier Casse
Hi All,
I recently purchased a Sony CD-writer Model CRX230ED. Well
"hwbrowser"or Xcdroast can correctly guess that that it's around
dev=0,0,0.
But when I do a
$cdrecord -scanbus
(w/ root it gives me:)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

cdrecord: No such file or directory. Cannot open '/dev/pg*'. Cannot open
SCSI driver.
cdrecord: For possible targets try 'cdrecord -scanbus'. Make sure you are
root.
cdrecord: For possible transport specifiers try 'cdrecord dev=help'.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
But when I do this , which I found on the web:
$ cdrecord -scanbus -dev=ATAPI
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Cdrecord-Clone 2.01a19 (i686-redhat-linux-gnu) Copyright (C) 1995-2003

devname: 'ATAPI'

0,4,0 4) *
0,5,0 5) *
0,6,0 6) *
0,7,0 7) *
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Well will this behavior affect my writing process? If I try to burn cd
with cdrecord, Will it be ok or shall I try safely with xcroast?
Is it possible to restore cdrecord -scanbus to a normal behavior w/o the
aditional arguments? Thanks. I don't really know how the system is dealing
w/ it right now. Any explanations would be appreciated. :-)
With kind regards,
Didier.

spamassassin Problems
by A Ve
Hi !
System: Fedora2, Following Apps installed: spamassassin-2.63-8,
postfix-2.1.4-4.fc2.
Postfix 2.1.4 is finally working - after some help from postfix
mailinglist and postfix-guru Ralf H and some other helpfull postfix-guys.
But ... spamassassin still not running. I configured it - as suggested in
the spamassassin doc:
master.cf before:
smtp inet n - n - - smtpd
mater.cf after:
smtp inet n - n - - smtpd -o
content_filter=spamassassin
spamassassin unix - n n - - pipe
user=test argv=/usr/bin/spamc -f -e /usr/sbin/sendmail -oi -f ${sender}
${recipient}
(taking care of linebreaks)
I restarted spamassassin + postfix and sent some spam-style mail. The
output from /var/log/maillog:
Aug 30 16:19:22 mail spamd[31884]: clean message (0.0/5.0) for user:200 in
0.1 seconds, 976 bytes.
Aug 30 16:19:22 mail spamc[31883]: exec failed: No such file or directory
Aug 30 16:19:22 mail postfix/pipe[31882]: EB152368423:
to=<user(a)example.com>, relay=spamassassin, delay=1, status=deferred
(system resource problem)
And the mail is not delivered / "vanished away" ... ;-) Any ideas ?
Regards, ave.

I'm guessing that there are several ways to approach this.
1. Write the program in a language with executables that runs on
multiple platforms.
a) Java and have your friend download the Sun JRE
b) Mono (C#) and have your friend install .NET runtime
2. Write the program in an interpreted language which runs on
multiple platforms
a) Perl and have your friend install Perl
b) Python and have your friend install Python
3. Build or install a cross-compiler for gcc and g++
a) Download the source for gcc
b) Build the cross-compiler - done via configure
c) Compile with the -bxxx switch to indicate the correct compiler
4. If you have a dual-boot machine, install Cygwin on Windows, then
compile under that. There is a switch to build a static binary.
a) Install Cygwin on Windows
b) Install the C / C++ compiler
c) I don't remember the compiler switch - plow through the man page
Just some thoughts - generic C++ should work OK across all platforms.

(fc2) kernel source rpm namechange convention?
by Joel Jaeggli
why did the name change from kernel-source for 2.6.5-1.358 to
kernel-sourcecode for 2.6.8-1.521. yum didn't pick up on the difference
when doing update so a number of mchines where I needed sources didn't
have them until I caught that.

You might try adding 'psmouse.proto=bare' to the vmlinuz line in
grub.conf. That resolved the multiple mouse issues I was having.

Many thanks for the replies. I was able to build /boot and /boot2 with
two grubs, but unable to get the BIOS to load from the second when the
first was down (other than by manually changing the boot drive).
Real hardware RAID, such as 3ware, costs more than I would like.
I found some interesting cards from HighPoint.
http://www.highpoint-tech.com/USA/sataraid.htm
They come with open-source drivers for linux, and claim that their
BIOS code will do redundant boot. Anyone have any experience with
these "RocketRAID" boards?
Thanks,

Hi Allen,
There may be an incompatibility with the DNS proxy in your router, or
your ISP's DNS server.
Your message states that "dig will give me an answer ..." but your example shows
dig failing: the status is NXDOMAIN, and the IP address does not appear
anywhere in the output. Dig from here shows:

Try dig @69.56.188.210 myfidelity.members.fidelity.com
If that also fails, the trouble is probably with your FC2; you
could use ethereal to see how the query or response is being corrupted.
If it works, try dig @<your.isp's.nameserver> myfidelity.members.fidelity.com
If that succeeds, the problem is probably in your router; specifying
explicit nameservers in FC2 should be a workaround.
If it fails, your ISP's server may be overly fussy; try using other DNS servers
near you (that accept outside queries).
