'Root login failed' and 'machine slow' and 'brain hurts'
by David Switzer
Hi all,
I'm definitely newbie to Linux (or anything non-Windows) but I just want to
help give a collective middle finger to M$.
I first tried (and a laughably feeble attempt) FreeBSD... Just too big a
jump for my windowwashed brain. Although I did get the OS installed and
running, I felt like a dog who had just caught that damn firetruck, "oh
$h!t, now what?" But instead of take the time to learn Unix languages, I
admit I feebly gave up after a few hours of drooling and grunting (neither
of which were very effective by the way for anyone thinking of trying this
strategy!).
I happened upon RedHat while perusing my options and learned of its
wondrous ways. And thus seeking free OS since RedHat is no longer free-free,
I happily happened onto the Fedora project. As happenstance would have it,
ignorance has followed me just like how partial IE startup code is embedded
in Windows startup (er...I mean like flies on $h!t) and I know not the
answer to 2 riddles:
I installed Fedora Core 3 for i386 by ISO last night at 1:30am to 5am from
start of download to functioning graphical desktop.
I installed onto a Compaq Presario laptop with x86-based 381 MHz AMD
processor 13 GB hard drive with 2.9 GB storage leftover after install.
(((1st question))) I had 13 GB hard drive, it used to be partitioned into
two 6.5 GB hard drives :C and :D when I had windows on it. Now when I put
Fedora Core on it, it only recognizes "hda2 with 6.087 MB as the physical
volume" Did Fedora not re-format the hard drive so I would have one big 13
GB hard drive again?, and if so, how do I fix that?
(((2nd question))) I had installed more RAM post-factory ?? MB, did Fedora
not recognize the extra memory automatically? And if so, how do I fix it?
Does the answer to the first question most probably have to do with why the
beautiful Fedora Core is running so slow with everything? I'm not just
complaining about a few paltry seconds. I definitely have a setting or two
wrong b/c there's no way all of you pros out there would be happy with
trying to type on an OpenOffice text doc and having to wait 30 seconds for
each letter to appear after you type it. I mean, it takes minimum of 4
minutes just to open OpenOffice suite. Many functions/apps I run, whether
it's on desktop or in an application window take several minutes to perform
and I can hear the processor or whatever just humming along like it's
working overtime.
Thank you immensely for your time and patience with a newbie,
Dave

How to install Unreal Tournament 2004 server for linux.
by Mark Berkwitt
It comes as a zip package that contains versions for linux, linux-64,
windows, and the Mac. There is no setup program. A readme file
instructs to extract to a folder and for linux, to execute the program
with the ucc-bin file located in folder UT2004/System.
Ok, so I created a folder at /home/mark/UT2004 and extracted to it. I
tried double clicking on the file ucc-bin but I got this permission
error. The permission (I forget what it was) had no execution checked so
I set it to 777. I also set the folders ut2004 and system to 777 and
ran the menu "Applications > Run Application..." but it does nothing.
There's no hard drive activity at all. What to do?

Looks like the mirrors you are trying timed out, you can try again later
or specify a mirror (listed at:
http://fedora.redhat.com/download/mirrors.html) If the problem happens
again, you might have a firewall issue. For example, try bringing up
the file (with wget or a browser or something):
http://mirrors.tummy.com/mirrors/fedora.redhat.com/fedora/linux/core/upd
ates/4/i386/repodata/primary.xml.gz
It just came up fine for me.

Re: network
by Tina Wang
Thanks for all helps on network configuration. After changing /etc/xinetd.d/telnet, I got telnet worked.
Yes, I could connect my box by using ssh. Making telnet worked is just another option to the system.

firewall?
by Jonathan Carpenter
I have fedora installed and I am wanting to monitor my servers using snmp
but for some reason I cannot connect to any servers running fedora 4. I have
stopped iptables that is the only firewall rules or chains that would stop
this. Does anyone have any idea why I cannot connect to any of the fedora
servers but I can to any of the others?
Thanks,

mounting USB drives
by korgull
Hi,
I wonder whether we have something like this in FC4 :
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/allcam/usb_storage_linux_guide.html
I'd actually like this feature because I often mount/umount usb drives. I'm
always first figuring out which drive it is mounted to and than mount it.
This is very inconvenient and I guess that the lastest FC would have
something more convenient but I simply don't know about it's existence.
Anyone can point me in a good direction ?

open source dvd software/player...
by bruce
hey...
trying to find an open source app to create a dvd file, as well as play the
file...
can anyone give me insights/pointers to software that you've actually
used/got exerience using/knowledge of...
basically, i'd like to be able to create test dvd files.. and to play them.
i'd also like to experiment with incorporating information within the dvd
information in a manner that can't be seen by the human eye, and then be
able to extract the information with a separate app..
trying to search through google isn't causing any real hits!
thanks

no connect to server
by Jonathan Carpenter
I have installed Fedora 4 as a postgresql server. But none of my other
servers can connect to it. Is there something in Fedora 4 that would be
blocking outside connections? I installed another server using another
flavor of Unix and by default all my servers can connect to it. Any help
would be appreciated.
Thanks

Re: Newbie: Mozilla and Firefox windows "disappear" under FC3 2.6.11
by Clive@Rational
Some diagnostic information I have found when Mozilla
fails under Linux Fedora 2.6.10 / 2.6.11
I do not have the skills to diagnose anything from
this
Should I post the info on some other list?
Thanks
