RPM run problem (trying to install the Mplayer GUI)
by Jared Buck
Hi all, I am having some issues with trying to install the Mplayer gui.
On the site where the RPM files are based, I have downloaded the GUI RPM
and the skin file, and then run the command:
rpm -Uvh mplayer-gui-1.0pre6-1.i386.rpm mplayer-skin-
default-1.4-1.noarch.rpm
But when I run that command, I get the error message:
warning: mplayer-gui-1.0pre6-1.i386.rpm: V3 DSA signature: NOKEY, key ID
75aa026a
error: can't create transaction lock
How do I fix this problem? Both of these files need to be RPM'ed
together because they depend on each other.

Interesting problem.
by Kyle Lagonegro (Student-Lagone37)
Okay so I've downloaded the 4 files I need for FC3, but oddly enough I have them saved on my computer, and can not move them to a CD... Windows (Of course) is showing me an error screen. Anyone had this problem when they were trying to switch or have any clue what I may have done wrong?
I downloaded the second set of four files on the first link from the Download section of the Fendora website. They are ISO files, and the error message reads
"Windows encountered a problem when tring to copy this file. What do you want Windows to do?"
"FC3-x86_64-disc1.iso"
"Tyoe: ISO File"
"Date Modified: 1/28/2005 10:01 AM"
"Size: 637 MB"
Then my choices are "Retry" and "Cancel"
Click Retry just pops the same message up, over and over again. Thanks for the help... I'm looking like quite the noob already on this site... Hehe

sendmail and sm-client very slow to start
by Jonathan Berry
Hi all,
I did a quick search and didn't see anything like this mentioned yet.
I noticed the other day that when my machine booted, sendmail and
sm-client took a very long time (about 3 minutes) to start. Tests
with a booted system show that it is not just happening on boot. They
just take that long to start. I've done some investigation and found
that sendmail is hanging with the command:
/usr/bin/newaliases
and then again at:
initlog -q -c '/usr/sbin/sendmail -bd -q1h'
I'm actually not sure where this second command comes from, as I don't
see it explicitly in /etc/init.d/sendmail. sm-client seems to hang at
a similar initlog command. I'm running /etc/init.d/sendmail with
#!/bin/bash -x to see these commands.
The newaliases program itself takes about 1 minute to run. Running
strace seems to reveal why; it hangs at the noted position in the
strace:
....selection from strace....
rt_sigaction(SIGPIPE, {0x2a96542cd0, [], 0x4000000}, {SIG_IGN}, 8) = 0
socket(PF_FILE, SOCK_DGRAM, 0) = 3
fcntl(3, F_SETFD, FD_CLOEXEC) = 0
connect(3, {sa_family=AF_FILE, path="/dev/log"}, 16) = 0
sendto(3, "<18>Feb 1 21:52:25 sendmail[656"..., 101, 0, NULL, 0) = 101
rt_sigaction(SIGPIPE, {SIG_IGN}, NULL, 8) = 0

rt_sigaction(SIGALRM, {0x552ab38360, [], SA_RESTART|0x4000000},
{SIG_DFL}, 8) = 0
alarm(60) = 0
rt_sigprocmask(SIG_UNBLOCK, [ALRM], [ALRM], 8) = 0
rt_sigprocmask(SIG_UNBLOCK, [ALRM], [], 8) = 0
# the program hangs right after printing "pause(" below

alarm(0) = 0
rt_sigreturn(0) = -1 EINTR (Interrupted system call)
stat("/etc/mail/service.switch", 0x7fbfffb2f0) = -1 ENOENT (No such
file or directory)
....end from strace....
I can post the entire strace somewhere if it might be relevant.
It sets an alarm for 60 seconds, which must eventually time out.
Anyone know what is going on here?
$ rpm -qa sendmail
sendmail-8.13.1-2.x86_64
I haven't changed any configuration files, exept for a recent alais to
send root's mail to me. The problems happened prior to that change
though. I don't know when this started, but I think it must be a
recent development. sendmail isn't mentioned in /var/log/yum.log, so
maybe from a kernel upgrade? I can try an older kernel and see if
that speeds things up if that might be relevant. I'm currently
running kernel 2.6.10-1.741_FC3 x86_64. Any ideas? Has anyone else
seen this?

core 3 hangs
by solarflow 99
I am having a problem booting core 3 on this 1 computer. It boots fine up
to the point where it says:
Switching to a new root
and, it just sits there. Does anyone have any ideas what could cause it to
hang there? low ram? I disabled selinux, and everthing else, upgraded the
kernel, but it still hangs.
Thanks...

KickStart fedora core 3 minimal exclude @base group
by Matt Higgins
I am attempting a minimal fc3 install <500 MB, I was shooting for
<200MB. Looking at the @core package group from comps.xml. My
calculations show this group to be about 130MB and its description tag
reads "<description>Smallest possible installation</description>".
However the "Minimal Install" from the installer is about 530MB. With
some research it looks like, the minimal install is not just @core but
also @base and @dialup. I can easily exclude @dialup by setting the
uservisible tag to true and unselecting this package group. When I try
the same for @base it does not show up in the package selection list?
So my questions are these
1. Is it possible though some ks syntax to exclude a default package
group from my kickstart config ? i.e. -@ PackageGroup ? If this were
possible I may be able to try -@base and -@dialup
leaving only @core.
2. Is it possible to not use any package group at all and simply
select the packages I want ? In this case I would just list out all
the rpms in the @core group and thats it .. possibly some extras.
3. Is there a way to create your own core package group.. this would
sever the same purpose as number 2 but possibly make it more flexible.
Note I know you can create your own extra package groups my goal is to
modify the existing @core group.
Some other things to note.. I would like to
have the kickstart totally unattended. I basically have the install
unattended with PXE,TFTP,NFS,DHCP but .. I need to tweak the packages.

networking howto wanted
by Duncan Lithgow
Hi all,
After searching for a bit i decided I didn't know what I was searching
for and certainly wasn't finding it.
I have one nice computer and one old one. I want to be able to use this
nice one from the old one. I don't know what that type of networking is
called so i haven't been able to find out how to do it.
A couple of links would really help me out here.
cheers, Duncan
