Unable to parse color:
by Mike McCarty
Recently I began having a problem with X Window and Fedora
Core 2. Various applications (xscreensaver, xterm, others)
are displaying this message:
<program>: can't parse color: e6e6e6
<program>: can't parse color: 000000
where "<program>" may be "xterm" etc.
I am using Gnome GTK 2.0 with BlueCurve as the theme. I have
found two files with e6e6e6 in them, specifying colors, but
each has "#e6e6e6", not just "e6e6e6". For example, in
/usr/share/themes/Bluecurve/gtk-2.0/gtkrc is the line
bg[NORMAL] = "#e6e6e6"
I do not have a $HOME/.Xresources file. I have not edited
/etc/X11/Xresources.
I made an entry in rgb.txt for
230 230 230 e6e6e6
0 0 0 000000
so these "colors" are now recognized and display properly,
but this cannot be right.
Any help available?

openssh auto login
by Bill Rees
Hi All,
I upgraded a redhat 7.3 system to FC4 and one of the problems
that has surfaced is that the ssh auto login feature that worked on 7.3,
no longer works. According to the man page for ssh, there is a
challenge/response phase to ssh authentication types where a
private/public key pair are involved. A simple private/public key pair
on the client and the public key on the server.
The web has mostly the same description of things to do with the
only added item the ssh-agent. Ufortunately, I'm trying to get a cron
job to access my server via rsync -e ssh. So can anyone clue me in to
what I've missed? I made sure the challenge response feature was
enabled in sshd_config, that authorized key authentication was enabled,
and PubkeyAthenitication was enabled.

Mounted USB drive shows up as "usb(2)"
by Mike McCarty
I have a USB drive which, when I mount it, shows up on the
desktop as "usb (2)". I have two entries in /etc/fstab
for this, because sometime it refuses to mount as /dev/sda1
and sometimes I have to use /dev/sde1. Anyway, here is the
relevant part of /etc/fstab
/dev/sda1 /mnt/usb auto noauto,user,exec 0 0
/dev/sde1 /mnt/usb auto noauto,user 0 0
So I wonder, why is it mounting as "usb (2)". Is that the
USB port number, or what?
And why do I sometimes need /dev/sde1 rather than /dev/sda1?

NTFS Concerns with FC2
by Mike McCarty
I have a multi-boot machine and need to share some files
between the Linux and Windows XP OSs. To date, I've been
either writing to floppy or burning a CD and rebooting, then
reading in. I'd like to just copy files between some shared
device, like my Windows XP partition.
I've heard that there is no problem mounting an NTFS volume
and reading it using Fedora Core 2, but that there are perhaps
problems *writing* to such a volume from FC2. Since the
direction I mostly need to go is FC2->WXP, this is of some
concern to me.
Can anyone answer this question for me? And where do I go
to research this without bothering people here? New to FCx
and don't know how to do the search at redhat.com yet.

NTFS issue
by Yogen Mankikar
I have successfully mounted ntfs drive, but it is accessible only to the
root user.
As a regular user I get 'permission denied' error.
What am I missing?
Here's what I did as root.
mount -t ntfs /dev/hda1 /mnt/C
mount -t ntfs /dev/hda5 /mnt/D
After making sure I was able to access both ntfs drives, I added the
following to /etc/fstab
/dev/hda1 /mnt/C ntfs defaults 0 0
/dev/hda5 /mnt/D ntfs defaults 0 0
Then I rebooted and logged on as a regular user.
Now ls /mnt/C gives 'permission denied'.
But if I log on as root I am able to access both ntfs drives just fine.
I'm a Linux newbie, any help is appreciated.

Fedora Core 4 on thinkpad T30. After install the login prompt is so large all I can see is Please
by Eric Storch
I have a odd question to ask. Is there anything special you have to do
when you install
fedora core 4 onto a thinkpad T30 ?
The reason I ask is when I installed Fedora core 4 all went well,
until I booted.
Once the system started up the login screen was so large all I could
make out what please.
Is there a way I can fix this ?
The really odd part is no mater how many times I change the resolution
or monitor type it still does the same thing. However one thing to
note, if I set the display for dual head the external display displays
correctly.
Any ideas ?

Yes!! I agree -- I cannot imagine trying to switch our teachers or
students here at the school over to linux, even if all the needed apps
did run (like our gradebook and school management software) Linux is a
great operating system for tech types and servers, but it is not ready
yet (notice I said YET) for general user / home user desktops. Yes,
there are some cases where limited use can work (email / websurfing
etc). I am going to begin the process this year of SLOWLY introducing
our students to it -- I am planning to set up a linux box (probably
ubuntu) with Open office etc on it and they will have to do at least one
project/ paper etc on it as part of their grade.

yum first-time user question
by Tom Poe
It has been an interesting 24 hours. Managed to get what appears to be
a RH8 apt-get dist-upgrade to take. Now, also have a yum version for
rh8 installed, and a /etc/yum.conf file to look at. I want to use yum
to move rh8 up to rh9. Can you point me to the documentation to set yum
up to do that? Any pointers appreciated. My goal is to keep upgrading
until I get to FC4. Is this doable, without the ability to burn CDs?

Can anyone here tell me what has gone wrong - and more importantly, how
to fix this?
