Recommendations on hardware/systems

Greetings, I'm ready to get a new box. Any recommendations on a Micro-ATX system. I see this barebones http://www.ibexpc.com/ib76mibasy1.html and would like to outfit it with two drives (80GB and 300GB) and a Gig of RAM (at least) along with a 16x DVD-/+ RW and then install FC6. calibrating gkrellm temp sensors

I am looking for a way to get a better calibration of gkrellm temp sensors than what Im doing now. I enter bios on boot and write done the readings, then continue the boot to bring up the operating system & gkrellm. The cpu load under these two conditions is quite different so I dont think the gkrellm values are reliable. This system is running an Intel Core 2 Duo (E6600) with an Intel M/B D975XBX. ACPI is no help, I like many others, have an empty thermal_zone directory (also fan directory is empty). dmidecode does not display my bios temps or fan speeds so cant use it with the O/S running to do the gkrellm calibration. Anyone have suggestions as to how to proceed? Thank you.

First boot after Fedora 6 installation hangs up

Hi. I'm trying to install Fedora 6 from scratch but after dozens of tries I couldn't have a single boot! This is what happens: After inserting the DVD I choose all the needed options and Fedora installs everything. Then it goes to the first boot. It begins to install the services but stops, say, while trying to install autofs. The I reboot (resetting the hardware) and use the option "I" to get interactive boot. Then I tell to not install autofs but it will stop trying to install a subsequent service. The only thing I can say is different from former installations is that I'm not using ipv6. I mean, during the installation I choose not to use ipv6. Any help is wellcome. Thanks, Ricardo

Missing define?

I hope I'm in the right place for this. I am working on a port of a Windows program, and am having some problems. I expected to have to write a number of system calls from scratch, but my problems are far more basic than that. I am running Fedora Core 3, and trying to compile the program with gcc. 1. time_t does not seem to be defined anywhere in /usr/include/, yet it is used in a fair number of include files. 2. size_t is only defined in malloc.h, which is not included (according to makedepend) by any of the headers that get included by my code. From what I know, which isn't much, I thought I'd find it in stddef.h or cstddef.h Ami I overlooking something simple? Larry

OpenOffice AutoFormat Driving me crazy

The subject says it all. How do I stop OfficeOffice Writer from continually re-formatting what I am working on. I am writing numbered paragraphs, but I do NOT want OO to auto-number them. Moreover I do NOT want OO to suddenly auto-indent a paragraph I have just finished writing. For example, I end the paragraph, hit 'Return' twice to create a line space between the end of the paragraph and the start of the next one, and when I hit the *second* return, the first paragraph self-indents a tab space....which is just what I do NOT want. I have tried Format Paragraph with everything set a '0'..and named that as the default.but that does not help. So where do I turn off that behaviour? This damn auto-indenting is about to cause me to auto-explode. Geoff

Honey I blew up the USB ports

I plugged my USB memory stick in the other night, and instantly froze my FC5 system. I mean bang--dead. The reboot went fine, journals all recovered fine (Nice!), but the system no longer responds to any device plugged in. No kernel messages at all. The stick still works in other computers, and the ports still don't work if I reboot into that other OS, so it sure looks like my USB ports are gone. All the kernel messages on bootup look ok, same as usual, no errors. Anyone else have this happen? Anything else I might try? Anything I should look for when buying an add-on card? <Joe

I810: drmSetBusid failed, Permission denied

I'm failing to get 3D acceleration working no my Intel-915-based Vaio laptop; I *thought* I'd 'just worked' with my initial install of FC5, but I've not upgraded to FC6 & it's not working. The only real telling thing I can see in the X output (I think I may have seen the BIOS checksum error as well) is: (II) I810(0): [drm] drmSetBusid failed (10, pci:0000:00:02.0), Permission denied .. and then DRI init. fails. There's also (in the log or glxgear's output) something about not supporting a certain visual, which I've seen mentioned. The only clue I can find online talks about gcc version mismatches, but I've not compiled any of these, they're just the normal Fedora RPMs. The i810 module's loaded, I've got Composite enabled and the DRI mode section in xorg.conf. I've tried adding the VideoRam option with 64Mb, but there aren't any RAM-related warnings in the X output. If you want to play stereo (2ch) sound through 6 speakers, you have to write a proper .asoundrc file. You can use the ttable method or the "route policy duplicate" option.
