FC5 install freezes on IBM T23 laptop
by Nick Miller
Hi All,
I am trying to perform a clean install of FC5 from the DVD ISO but I
seem to be having some weird issues. Every time I try to run the
installer (both in text and graphical mode) my system locks up
completely. It always happens when the installer is actually installing
the RPMs and it is always on different packages. Just wondering if
anyone else has experienced this problem. Also tried doing a network
install but the same issue occurs.
Regards,
Nick

RE: slow FC4 to FC5 upgrade

Yes, that helps. Free reports:
$ free
total used free shared buffers cached
Mem: 256212 58400 197812 0 1912 28416
-/+ buffers/cache: 28072 228140
Swap: 524280 87600 436680
So it does look like I have swap turned on. Some further testing
indicates that the removal of old kernel-devel packages (15 of them) is
at least part of the problem. I tried running:
$ package-cleanup --oldkernels
from yum-utils. That resulted in the same error as did my big yum
update (which was "memory alloc (4 bytes) returned NULL"). So I tried:
$ yum remove kernel-devel-2.6.12-*_FC4
Figuring that 15 was too many to remove at once so just remove these 5.
Same error. In fact, attempting to remove just one kernel-devel package
resulted in this error. Is there another way to remove them that may
work?

Preview Video content in Konqueror
by Greg Trounson
Hi,
Up until recently I have been able to use Konqueror to preview all sorts
of files, including video. However since upgrading to FC4 I can no
longer do this. Video previewing seems to have been totally removed
from Konqueror altogether (though it still works fine on my Debian box).
Normally one can just go to the View and select Preview->Video, but the
Video menu item is no longer there. It has Sound Files, Images, Text
Files, Font Files, Electronic Business Card Files (?!), but no mention
of Video.
I have read about other people having this problem and re-installing
kdemultimedia or kdemultimedia-extras fixing it for them, but no such
luck in my case. I have installed and re-installed mplayer, xine,
kaffeine, kmplayer, kaboodle, noatun, et al ad nauseum with no effect.
What can one do to get video previews back?
thanks,
Greg

ATI Fire GL 5100 does not work under FC5
by John Ragnico
Hi.
Sorry I posted this under a wrong header, I post it again.
I just installed FC5. No problems but for graphical mode screen.
I have an ATI Fire GL V5100 card, and an HP 2335 23" screen.
I cannot set in any way the correct resolution (1920x1200).
I had to install in text mode, that worked: after that the computer
will start in runmode 3, and changing the resolution has no effect
(even at something lower than 1920x1200: it always stays, I believe, to
the lowest resolution).
Help and hints would be very appreciated...
Thanks!
ps manually changing the xorg config file to only leave the 1920x1200
line did not have any effect.
pps I have used yum to install the new kernel (and all packets
available at today), and nothing changes.

FC5 install & Princeton Synergy LCD monitor "Out of Timing" problem
by Bob St John
Folks,
Just did a new FC5 install on a brand new box (to be dual-booted with Windows XP).
Install went perfectly (I think), but on first real boot (and subsequent retries) I see start of boot on my Princeton Synergy LCD monitor, then suddenly I get:
"Out of Timing - V=65Hz - H=81Khx"
on a black screen and nothing else.
So I think the FC5 video set-up went wrong someplace, but I don't know how to fix this.
Any advice? Thanks . . .

broadcom wireless
by Wolfgang S. Rupprecht
I'm trying to get the built-in wireless working on a new Compag
v5000z. lspci claims the following:
06:02.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation Dell Wireless 1470 DualBand WLAN (rev 02)
Subsystem: Hewlett-Packard Company Unknown device 1358
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 64, IRQ 10
Memory at c0204000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=8K]
I'd first assumed it was a BCM43xx card and followed the instructions
on bcm43xx-fwcutter to get the card going. I never see an eth1 (or
other new network device) show up under "ifconfig -a".
Short of ripping the laptop apart and putting the wireless chips under
a magnifying glass, how do I find out what chip this really is? (Or
is "1470" the chip number? I had assumed it was a the mini-pci card's
model number.)
