Compiling on gcc 3 in FC5
by Mariano López Reta
I'm resending this because I did not see it come thru. I'm sorry if it has
been double-posted.
Hello, all
I need to compile a kernel module in FC5, but it has to be compiled using gcc
3 instead of 4 (I understand that in FC5, gcc 4 is the default).
How can I do that? I mean, what commands/syntax should I use to do it?
Thanks in advance,

Wireless network does not start at bootup
by awrobinson-ml@nc.rr.com
The wireless works, but it doesn't start at bootup. I have to issue the
"ifup eth1" command. I was hoping someone could suggest a reason why or
what I should look for.
Here's the ifcfg-eth1 file:
DEVICE=eth1
ONBOOT=yes
BOOTPROTO=static
IPADDR=192.168.1.25
NETMASK=255.255.255.0
BROADCAST=192.168.1.255
NETWORK=192.168.1.0

TYPE=Wireless
MODE=Managed
ESSID=wireless1

Thanks!

FC5: kernel 2.6.16-1.2080 doesn't connect ADSL (PPoE)
by Antonio M
I have two routers on two different networks (home & office)
They have two NIC's and they should connect to the Internet by an
external Ethernet modem.
If I use 2.6.16-1.2080 there is no way to conenct to the Internet (on
both networks) but if I use 2.6.15-1.2054 connection is started
immediately.
What is happening? I will file a bug...

Suspend problems on a thinkpad T30?
by Brad Smith
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
Hash: SHA1
Has anyone found a trick for (or even had a problem) getting suspend to work properly under FC5 on a
Thinkpad T30? Under FC4 everything worked fine on mine, I just had to include "apm=on acpi=off"
in the kernel args. After a fresh install of FC5, with or without the kernel args, it is a no go.
When I close the laptop it goes into suspend, but when I open it again I experience varying levels
of freezing up. I say varying because sometimes it's locked completely, sometimes the mouse moves
but the cursor does not change, clicks are unresponsive and the keyboard does nothing. One time
things seemed to work but when I moved my mouse over the gnome panel it disappeared. I switched to a
VC and back, which somehow fixed the problem.
Needless to say this is a major obstacle for me. Can anyone help?
Thanks in advance!

controlling mount options on FC5?
by D. Hugh Redelmeier
I want to control some mount options for my USB flash disk (actually,
an MP3 player). I don't yet know how.
Why? Here's what I get, just for plugging it in, according to mount:
/dev/sdf1 on /media/disk type vfat (rw,noexec,nosuid,nodev,shortname=winnt,uid=104)
What would I like to change?
- the mount point -- /media/disk is rather nondescript
- the mount options to be kinder to flash memory:
+ noatime
+ async (probably the default), but I'd like to be able to chose sync
Changing the mount point
========================
To change the mount point, I think all I have to do is put a label on
the (vfat) file system. Fine. How do I do this using Linux?
There are two very awkward ways that I know. Are there more
convenient ways?
(a) reformat the file system: mkfs.vfat has a option -n to add a
volume name
(b) mtools has a program mlabel(1) which can add a label to a vfat
file system. Unfortunately, to operate on a device, that device
needs to be assigned a CP/M-style drive letter in
/etc/mtools.conf. For USB drives this is very unsatisfactory
because every time you plug in the drive, it might be somewhere
else in /dev. And don't forget to unmount the drive's file system
before using mlabel.
This is much easier in MS Windows, but I don't want to stoop to that.
Changing mount options
======================
HAL and friends now do the mounting. How can I control the mount
options?
There are some hints in the Fedora Core 5 release notes. In
particular, 7.1 talks about udev rules and 7.7 talks about how fstab
is no longer magically edited.
I don't *think* that udev rules are the right way to control mount
options, but I might be wrong.
Time to figure out hal. Unfortunately, it seems to be changing
rapidly and the obvious place to look for documentation is silent.
Worse, actually: we are teased with a promise that is not fulfilled.
"man -k hal" lists:
gnome-mount (rpm) - Mount replacement which uses HAL to do the mounting
hal (rpm) - Hardware Abstraction Layer
hal-cups-utils (rpm) - Halified CUPS utilities
hal-devel (rpm) - Libraries and headers for HAL
hal-gnome (rpm) - GNOME based device manager for HAL
but none of these man pages seems to exist! A man section "rpm" does
not exist either.
The relevant control files are probably those with a .fdi suffix.
Locate is my friend. There seem to be a lot of them in the
directories /usr/share/doc/hal-0.5.7/conf/ and /usr/share/hal/fdi/.
My guess is that these are samples and that to be active they must be
would have to be under /etc/hal/fdi. Currently that directory has
only empty subdirectories.
.fdi files appear to be in XML. Not my favourite format for
modifying. Are there any official tools for creating and modifying
.fdi files?
Is there any documentation to describe the schema?
Googling gets me stuff that seems to be obsolete. Mostly FC3-era
stuff.

Can't install FC5
by Jelvis
Hi All,
I am soon giving up on installing FC5.
I have an old computer which is running FC4 successfully since its
release. Soltek motherboard, Matrox Millenium II graphics, AMD 1600+,
256 MB memory. Nothing special.
I have downloaded the DVD and burned it using the computer above.
Since I can't run the mediacheck on this computer I have verified the
DVD on another computer. From that computer I was also able to run the
install program.
When I boot from the DVD I get the initial boot screen and the "linux:"
prompt. After the prompt I just get a black screen. No output, nothing.
I can see the lines showing loading of the kernel at the bottom of the
initial boot screen but after that - blank and no output.
I have tried a multitude of boot options. noacpi, noprobe, etc and
nothing works.
Since I don't even get some kind of output I have no idea where to start.
All suggestions would be appreciated.
Best regards
Andreas

Paritioning Help??
by Stephen Esquibel
Here's what I'm trying to do:
I have 2 hard drives, one windows, one FC4. currently I boot into linux and
have grub pass on the loading to hda2 (winxp) if so desired. I would like
to create 2 new partitions on hdb2 (LVM Volume00), one for a linux to
windows transfer space (approx 7GB) and a installation partition so that I
can mount FC5 iso's and boot to that partition to install. Is it possible
to shrink my hdb2 partition to accomodate these 2 new ones? here is the
output of fdisk -l
[root@ip213 etc]# fdisk -l
Disk /dev/hda: 164.6 GB, 164696555520 bytes
240 heads, 63 sectors/track, 21274 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 15120 * 512 = 7741440 bytes
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/hda1 1 596 4505728+ 12 Compaq diagnostics
/dev/hda2 * 597 21273 156318120 7 HPFS/NTFS
Disk /dev/hdb: 160.0 GB, 160041885696 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 19457 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/hdb1 * 1 13 104391 83 Linux
/dev/hdb2 14 19457 156183930 8e Linux LVM
Is this possible? (i'm relatively new to linux)
Thanks.

Please help newbie on group definition for own custom yum repositories
by Robinson Tiemuqinke
Hi,
Newbie questions regarding group definition for own
custom yum repositories for installatino and upgrade
systems.
I have created my own package repositories for FC4
and FC5, and created metadata files with createrepo
command. Then I could install individual pacakges
without problems.
But my question is: How I can define my own group(s)
like redhat did? do I have to write a similar xml
file? if so then where can I find a document for this
task?
If I create a group definition file, which commands I
have to run to put it into functioning?
At last, How can I change redhat's group XML file? I
don't like its idea of "base", "mandate", "optional
and default on", "optional and default off", this make
it interactive-friendly but largescale-terrible.
I like a idea of "either in group and always on, or
just not in this group", so that it will be much
easier for central non-interactive installation and
distribution upgrade. If my idea reasonable?
Please help this newbie. Thanks a lot.
