OT-motherboard
by Bob Taylor
What Intel or AMD based 32 bit motherboard would you recommend with a
minimum 1 Gig RAM. I don't require the latest. The first board
manufactured with 1 Gig RAM would be fine. Of course Linux must fully
support the board.
I'm asking because I am totally ignorant about motherboards. :-)

Multiple TCP Connection
by Eder, Norbert
Hello all,
When I use Fedora Core 3 to open multiple TCP Connection to a
SUN-Solaris Maschine, I can open arround 15000 connections in parallel.
I have checked it with:
netstat -s |grep connections
29976 active connections openings
14929 connections established
But when I upgrade to FC4, then only around 11000 TCP connections are
possible at the same time.
The Error Report is "Segmentation fault".
Is there a Parameter for limitation?? ("ulimit" / "/proc/sys/...." / ...
)
Can anybody help me??
THANKS for your help.
bye,

troubles whit lan drivers using Fedora Core 4
by Rolando
Hi
for my new p.c. I bought a P5V800-MX ASUS motherboard whit internal NIC, and I would like to use Fedora Core 4.
After FC4 installation (as workstation mode) the LAN does't work because I'have to install the driver for NIC: the driver is in a ASUS CD with others support softwares (audio driver, vga driver, etc.).
To do that ASUS releases a VIA Rhine Family Fast Ethernet Adapter for Linux driver (the compressed file name is rhinefet.tgz) with instructions for linux driver installation...
ASUS writes:
1): compile the source code to generate rhinefet.ko (I'm using a 2.6.11-1.1369_FC4smp kernel)
2) insert the compiled file as module using insmode command
But when I try, following instructions, to "make" the files I just obtain errors like "union <anonymous> has no member named 'ethernet'
Can anybody help me?
Thanks a lot for your help.
bye,
Rolando

Installing mailman of Fedora Core 5
by Ignacio Verona
Hi,
I'm trying to install mailman on a FC5 system, but doing 'yum install
mailman' returns me a lot of lines like:
[1/1]warning: group mailman does not exist - using root
And after that I'm not able to do anything.
'/usr/lib/mailman/bin/mmsitepass' returns:
Traceback (most recent call last):
File "/usr/lib/mailman/bin/mmsitepass", line 45, in ?
from Mailman import Utils
File "/usr/lib/mailman/Mailman/Utils.py", line 51, in ?
from Mailman import mm_cfg
File "/usr/lib/mailman/Mailman/mm_cfg.py", line 51, in ?
MAILMAN_GID = grp.getgrnam('mailman')[2]
KeyError: 'getgrnam(): name not found: mailman'
Because neither the 'mailman' user or 'mailman' group does exist. Any
clue about what happens?
thanks a lot in advance,
Ignacio.

Dell Inspiron 8300 and FC5 1280x800 resolution
by jery_wang
Hello,
I installed FC5 on my laptop which is a Dell Inspiron 8300. (Almost) everything worked perfectly, only one small important thing is not working and I dont know how to solve this problem. While the system permits to change the resolution to 1280x800, when I try to do that, the scren like devides in two and basically we can't read anything.
I never had this problem with FC4,
Please, any help would be apreciated.
Congratulations on FC5, I noticed that the menu options are MUCH faster to access. When I have my screen problem resolved, I will notice another diferences.
Cheers
Martinho

How to verify transmission quality & cables on gigabit network?
by Rob
Hello,
I have a cluster, master + 8 nodes, connected via
a Netgear Gigabit Ethernet Switch (model JGS516).
The cables are of CAT5 type.
Elsewhere I read that for a gigabit network, one
should use CAT6 type cables, to avoid bad
transmissions. Is that so?
I already have done basic speed checks, that indicate
a throughput of about 0.5 Gbps. Hence the network
appears to operate on half of its spec. speed.
Question 1:
Should I worry about this reduced speed?
Question 2:
How to check the transmission quality?
Should I inspect the output of "/sbin/ifconfig eth0"
for errors/dropped/overruns/collisions etc. in the
RX/TX lines?
Lan card info:
master: Tigon3 10/100/1000BaseT Ethernet
tg3: eth0: Link is up at 1000 Mbps, full duplex.
tg3: eth0: Flow control is on for TX and on for RX.
nodes: Realtek RTL8169
eth0: Auto-negotiation Enabled.
eth0: 1000Mbps Full-duplex operation.
Thanks for advice and help!
Rob.

Livna ATI drivers
by Marcelo Magno T. Sales
Hi, people
I can't make livna ATI drivers to work with my ATI All-in-Wonder 9000
pro (radeon 9000) video card. They don't give me 3D acceleration.
Besides installing kmod-fglrx and xorg-x11-drv-fglrx, is there any
other package I should install or any manual configuration I shoud
attempt?
Thanks,

5.1 Support
by Michael Offermann
Hello,
I have some trouble with my Soundcard. It's a Realtek ALC850 device on a
Asus A8N-SLI Premium Mainboard (Chipset: nVidia® nForce4 SLI MCP).
Stereo Mode does work pretty, but for me it's not possilbe, or lets
better say, I don't know how to activate the 5.1 Support. According to
this, the sound is realy terrible, because, the low frequencies (the
bass) are not supportet by my tweakers, so they crack a lot.
Does anybody know of this problem and can tell me the solution?

FC5 docs
by Keith Powell
Hello!
Although I'm very much a Fedora newbie, I have been using other Linux
distros for some time and am OK with the "standard" operations.
However, I have got an FC5 magazine cover disk DVD and want to try
Fedora for the first time. I've installed it and initial impressions
are very good.
There are some things which I have not come across before, such as
YAM, PIRUT, and PUP. I want to find out how to use these packages,
how to add repositories to them, and which repositories to add. For
example, I understand that I need to add livna in order to install an
nvidia driver. (My LCD monitor is off-centre unless I use the nvidia
driver, rather than the generic nv one.)
There will be other things I will find which are new to me as well.
Is there a manual on using Fedora which I could download and print
out? I would rather do this than keep bombarding the list with basic
questions. There is no document included on the DVD.
Thanks for any help.
Keith
