k3b takes ages scanning CDs devices
by Paul Smith
Dear All
k3b takes ages scanning CDs devices. My configuration is:
# /sbin/hdparm /dev/dvd
/dev/dvd:
IO_support = 1 (32-bit)
unmaskirq = 1 (on)
using_dma = 1 (on)
keepsettings = 0 (off)
readonly = 0 (off)
readahead = 256 (on)
HDIO_GETGEO failed: Inappropriate ioctl for device
#
and the recording speed is fine. Any ideas?
Thanks in advance,
Paul

dma on as default
by Paul Smith
Dear All
Is there some way to make permanent/default the change operated by
'/sbin/hdparm -d1 /dev/dvd', i.e., choosing dma on as default?
Thanks in advance,

encfs + nfs = nothing
by Dr. Michael J. Chudobiak
Hi all,
I have a fileserver whose data I want to secure against physical theft,
so I set up an encrypted encfs volume. encfs works very well and
painlessly, until you try to export the data via NFS. Doesn't work!
Seems to be an obscure limitation of fuse filesystems...
The "official" suggested workaround is to export the raw data using NFS,
and run encfs clients on every client computer, but that's a
cross-platform management nightmare. I want Windows and FC5 computers to
access the NFS shares.
Alternatively, a "user space" nfs server can be used - but I don't see
any packaged for FC5.
Any suggestions on how to make this work?

Anacron 'Cannot run' messages
by Anne Wilson
I've just received this:
/etc/cron.weekly/0anacron:
anacron: Cannot run - another anacron process is already running.: Resource
deadlock avoided
Yesterday I had a similar one for cron.daily/0anacron:
I suspect that both of these happened while running updates - the laptop in
question is slow. Could that be the cause?
Does anyone know how soon after bootup anacron starts its work? Should I
expect it to be a lengthy process on a slow box?

Thanks! Have documented how to respin custom isos?

I only found an IRC pointer and a HTML form. I also tried search and
advanced search.

Is printing broken in FC5?
by Douglas Phillipson
system-config-printer won't come up. It asks for my password, but the
GUI never appears. Anybody else have this problem? I also tried the
localhost:631 route and although I can create a printer, I can't print
to it (it's a USB hp1020). I'm using the foo2zjs driver which worked
fine under FC4. ( http://foo2zjs.rkkda.com/)
Thanks

Want uni-processor kernel on FC5 x86_64
by Harald Grossauer
Hi,
since the upgrade to FC5.x86_64 (from FC3.x86_64) Thunderbird sometimes
locks up when downloading large emails (not always reproducible),
Firefox frequently hangs (irreproducibly) without apparent reason.
Starting both programs with "strace -f ..." shows that the last system
call before lockups are futex syscalls. So I thought there might be some
race condition? Maybe it has to do with the SMP kernel used by default
in 64bit FC5? Is there a way to get a "FC5.x86_64-standard kernel"
without SMP?
Regards,
Harald
