Smolt - Hardware Database - Wiki
by Harald Hoyer
Hi List,
I want to encourage you to extend http://smolts.org/wiki/ with entries for problematic hardware.
How to submit your hardware profile:
$ smoltGui
or directly
$ smoltSendProfile
Point your browser at the URL with your resulting profile. Rate your hardware according to the functionality,
follow the link to the wiki (only for non-out-of-the-box-working hardware) to provide useful information for
others.
Examples:
http://smolts.org/wiki/Special:Search?search=nvidia&go=Go
Then, if a user is having problems with a specific piece of hardware, point him to the wiki entry. Extend the
wiki, let it be a useful tool for all linux users.
Spread the word. The more wiki entries we get, the most we have of it.
Thx,
Harald

Maybe I need to back up a little to explain my process. I am using a
combination of DHCP/PXE/TFTP and kickstart to load systems with the same
custom Fedora image. I have a single server which provides all of the
necessary information. So the boot flows as follows:
Target is configured to boot via DHCP. DHCP server will be
called server1.
DHCP on server1 is configured for a range of IP addresses and the
"filename" option pointing to my /tftpboot/kickstart directory
PXE on server1 is configured on server1 to present a list of boot
options. One of which is FC7. That PXE configuration looks like
[X86PC/UNDI/fedora-core-7-install/ImageFile_Name]
0
2
linux
In the above directory, there is linux.0, linux-1->vmlinuz, and
linux.2->initrd.img
In the /tftpboot/kickstart directory, there are links like
10.254.13.112-kickstart->ks.cfg
So when the FC7 option is chosen from PXE, I specify a kernel of
"ks" for kickstart. From there, linux.1 (vmlinuz) and
linux.2(initrd.img) are downloaded and then the ks.cfg is processed to
load the custom configuration/RPMS. My problem occurs when linux.2
(initrd.img) is loaded, it fails with the previously indicated
messages. I thought I had a bad initrd.img for my system. My other
thoughts involved incorrect RAMDISK size. I do not believe I am getting
to my ks.cfg although it is difficult to tell.

Which Server one Should Run-SLAPD/LDAP?
by Jyotishmaan Ray
Dear ALL,
I would like to know a few things from your end. They are as follows:-
1.
Should We Run SLAPD or LDAP ? And why?
In other words, which command to execute:-
service slapd restart
or
service ldap restart
2.
In my case, i have installed the openldap packages with the help of commands:-
yum install openldap openldap-clients,....
3.
When i tried to execute the comand, service slapd restart, it ddint excute in the
path /sbin.
4. If i have to run ldap then why and if slapd then why ?
Are they all dependent on the operating system etc?
Plus how they are linked to the databases at the backend ??
Like as mentioned in the manual here the slapd is linked to the LDBM, SHELL and
PASSWD databases?
Next question which database to use in the slapd.conf file ??
Please reply wih all the answers.
With Thanks And Regards,
Jyotishmaan Ray

Fedora without RPM?
by Isaac Serafino
Is there any way to get and use Fedora without the RPM program or any
RPM packages, for instance, using an alternative package manager, or
compiling everything from the source?

how to split huge 8gb wmv file (VC-1 codec bluray video) ?
by Valent Turkovic
Hi,
are there any video command line gurus here? :)
I tried a few ways to split a huge 8gb video file encoded with VC-1
codec and encapsulated in wmv file.
Do you have any ideas?!? I'm desperate, I even tried a few windows
freewares under wine which failed also :(
Thank you in advance.
ps. is there any way to burn 8gb file to 8GB DL DVD media? I see that
k3b and the rest of the bunch have an issue with files bigger that
4gb.
Valent.

Turn X Windows off
by Karl Larsen
I have the latest Nvidia for this computer and it is a run file. No
problem there but it will only work if X windows is off. Is there a
simple way to put yourself in level 3 and then run the thing in a directory?
Now it seems the rescue CD might be the way...
