Screensaver will not start - Fedora 7 & KDE 3.5.8
by Kevin Kempter
Hi List;
I'm running Fedora 7 on a Sony Vaio laptop (VGN-SZ430N/B)
I have it set to start after 1minute. I also have Kpowersave to start the
screensaver if I close the lid.
I can right click on the desktop, choose 'lock session' and the screensaver
will start. Also if I close the laptop lid the screensaver will start however
if I leave the machine Idle for several minutes the screensaver never starts.
Thanks in advance for any help...

configuring sudo access for some users
by ankush grover
Hi friends,
I want to configure sudo access for some users on my system. I am currently
using FC7 on my system. What they require (I mean users) is to do all the
things except they cannot su/su- to become anyother user or root user, they
should not be able to change anybody's password or atleast root's password,
cannot modify /etc/sudoers and etc/pam.d/su files . I have a script which
can extract all commands issued with "sudo" but if these users become root
then I won't be able to know who has done what.
I have already restricted su/su - access by editing /etc/pam.d/su and
uncommenting the below line:
# Uncomment the following line to require a user to be in the "wheel" group.
auth required pam_wheel.so use_uid
Authentication on my system is done through LDAP but also Use MD5, Use
Shadow and Local Authorization is sufficient options are enabled so that
local user for ex myself can login without authenticating to LDAP. Users for
which i want to configure sudo access will all be authenticated through
LDAP.
Currently I have added these 2 lines in /etc/sudoers (I used visudo command
to edit this file)
test ALL=(ALL) ALL, !/usr/bin/su
test2 ALL=(ALL) ALL, !/usr/bin/su
Both test and test2 are able to become root when they use "sudo su - " but
they are not able to become root user when they issue "su -". How do I
restrict these users not to become root or any other user through sudo su -
and also these users should not able to change their or other users
passwords on this system.
Thanks & Regards

Stop postfix

I installed F8.
I updated F8 (yum update)
I removed sendmail (yum remove sendmail).
I installed postfix (yum install postfix).
I installed dovecot (yum install dovecot).
I installed fetchmail (yum install fetchmail).
I installed samba (yum install samba).
I installed dhcp (yum install dhcp).
If I shutdown and restart ( shutdown -r now) the messages are regular ( all

Can you help me?

Was there ever any resolution to this? I'm seeing the same problem on
an F7 x86_64 system with a Promise sata controller.

Dual-Head with Different Resolution (slightly OT)
by Reuben D. Budiardja
Hello,
I have an LCD with 1280x1024 native resolution. I plan to buy a new widescreen
LCD with 1680x1050 resolution, to use in dual-head configuration. I have
NVidia GeForce FX 5200, with VGA and DVI output to drive them, by plugging
one LCD to VGA and the other one to DVI port.
Is it possible to use this setup, and have the card drive the monitors with
different resolution ? I'm using NVidia proprietary driver.
I have done something similar with both monitor runs on the same resolution,
using "Twinview" option on the Xorg.conf, but I don't know how to do it with
different resolutions on the monitors. If my current setup doesn't work, will
a better video card (presumably one with dual DVI) help me, or do I have to
have same resolution monitors ? can anyone recommend one ?
I don't do gaming and only use this mostly for programming and CAD drawing and
3D data visualization, so I don't need high-performance graphic card, only
something decent to work with.
Thanks for any help / info.

I miss smbfs: cifs doesn't work as expected
by Nico Sabbi
Hi,
with another distribution I could mount an SMB share as my user
(passing different credentials to mount.smbfs)
in such a manner that on my pc the mounted files appeared
to belong to my user.
The /etc/fstab entry was:
//server/dir /home/nico/dir smbfs
noauto,users,rw,noexec,username=MYUSERNAME,password=MYPWD 0 0 0 0
In FC8, instead, using cifs I can't obtain the same result: mounting
always fails. The problem seems to be related to mount.cifs:
$ smb4k_mount -t cifs -n //server/dir ./a -o
username=MYUSERNAME,password=MYPWD
mount error 1 = Operation not permitted
Refer to the mount.cifs(8) manual page (e.g.man mount.cifs)
How can I make this configuration work? I can neither change
the user exporting the share nor change my local user.
I'd like to use the good old smbfs, but it seems to have been
completely removed from Fedora kernels (why? ) .
Thanks,
Nico
