FC 6 Install is stalled
by Stan Dereska
Sir,
After buying a SAM's book and CD from a Microcenter a few days ago, I
tried to follow the installation
procedure using a CD but my PC failed to recognize an OS (I've erased
the hard drive which had Win XP).
The book describes an install procedure using a CD from a program
called "kickstart" that causes my
machine to recognize the CD, I believe. How do I boot up to install
FC 6 ? Where can I download kickstart ?
I'm new to Unix and Linux . Thanx for your assistance.

Killed /home installing Fedora 7 with Ubuntu
by Dotan Cohen
While installing Fedora 7 on a Dell Inspiron laptop previously running
Ubuntu, I had corrupted and then erased /home (sda4) by accident.
After a failed Fedora install, Ubuntu would not boot. Not knowing what
to do, and with no way to boot and google the situation, I played Y,
Y, Y to all fsck's questions. Now, /home is empty. I do have a backup
from 4 weeks ago, as I backup the first of every month, but I have
done quite a bit of work this past month. I'm very interested in
recovering the data.
More info: This is a Dell Inspiron machine, 2.0GHz dual-core Intel
processor, 2GB RAM, 80GB 7000RPM hard drive, ATI X1400 video. The disk
is partitioned with sda1: 15GB /; sda2: 15 GB blank (Fedora was to go
here) ; sda3: 3GB swap ; sda4: ~47 GB /home. I set these partitions a
few months ago when I last installed Ubuntu. I had begun install of
Fedora 7 when the machine crashed- I didn't get to the real install
part. Upon rebooting (into Ubuntu), it complained something about
inodes. I gave it the root password (yes, I had previously set a root
password) and ran fsck (or something else resembling a rather
unacceptable work, appropriate name by the way). A few Y, Y, Y's later
I could boot the system. However, as soon as I logged into KDE I was
returned to the login screen. I CTRL-ALT-F4ed into a terminal and
logged in as root. I then cd'ed into /home, and ls showed that there
was nothing there. I immediately ran shutdown -h and now that I'm home
I'm writing from the wife's desktop.
Any help in recovering the /home/user directory, or even specific
files therein, would be very much appreciated. Thank you in advance.

OT - Bourne shell array sort
by Tod
Without having to write my own, is there a quick way I can sort a two
dimensional array on a specific column? Of course if there's a list
that might be better to post this question to I'd appreciate that as well.
Thanks - Tod

Fedora 7 Live CD hibernation consecuences
by Fernando Apesteguía
Hi all,
I was trying out Fedora 7 Live CD. I wanted to know if the hibernation
feature worked in my computer. I tried to hibernate it but I got a
flash falling back to console for a while (some ACPI warnings) and
then back again to X11.
OK, it didn't work... but the point is that after a safe power off (no
errors or warnings) I couldn't boot into my FC 6!!! No GRUB menu...
nothing. After some minutes of panic, I reset my BIOS to it's default
values and I could boot. Everything seems to be fine.
Is this the first time this happens? Is this a bug? Should I open a
bug in bugzilla?
Cheers
PS: No, I'm _not_ going to try to reproduce this :)

How does the fedora brewbuilder work?
by Mark
Hey,
At this moment i'm looking into using distcc to use another computer
in my network to speed up the compilation progress but while looking
at that stuff i wondered how fedora is doing it. So is the build
system actually a cluster of 10? computers which are working with
distcc to compile all that stuff asap?
Some info about this would be interesting.
Thanx,
Mark.

yum peculuarity on i586 and i686 rpms
by Aaron Konstam
Ok, I require clarification. My yum updates does not include
the kernel-2.6.1-33.fc7 because in the repos there is not i386 kernel
with this version even though they are i386 repos. On the other hand
the kernel-headers-2.6.1-33.fc7 was installed because this is a
designated as a i386 rpm.
Is there a rule covering this? Why are others getting this later kernel
version installed?

New hang on suspend, anyone?
by Chris Schumann
I have a ThinkPad T60 running F7. After the recent kernel update, suspend
to RAM no longer works. It drops to text mode, says it is suspending, and
locks up.
I can't get the machine to respond at all with the keyboard, so I can't
get to a console.
Is this common? Is there a work-around? (I kind of like suspend on a
laptop.)
